My experience from the likes of Rio, BHP, Anglo American and other miners - if you want to be a supplier of services to these guys, you need an ABN number before you are given a vendor number and a vendor number is required to get an invoice processed.

Interestingly I have rarely had payment problems from the big guys - they pay like clockwork.
of course you need an ABN Number, and a registred business Name, what Im saying, as stated by Rovercare, is you do NOT need to be registered for GST

I have a relation who does lawnmowing and small odd jobs for local real estate agents with rental properties. He has an ABN and does returns etc, seems to be getting lots of regular work charging $45 an hour, so it can be done.
