    New Guinea, mechanics nightmare

The future son-in-law works for Volvo commercial vehicles, as a diesel mechanic. The company has sent 6 mechanics from Australia with a contract to work on Renault trucks, used by a firm that is building a gas pipeline. They have 120 trucks, that have virtually no servicing done at all, and consequently just about all are off the road, and work on the pipeline has ground to a halt. The 6 from Australia are working 84 hour weeks, non stop for a month, then a week off, then another month, until the work is done . What a way to run a company, but it should be a good little earner for him. Don't know about the tax, though. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Thank goodness he is in the Army reserve, should be able to look after himself. It's still a wild place up there. Bob

I was just thinking that it sounds very similar to what we used to do in the ADF.

The company he has had his apprenticeship with [ volvo etc] has a deal with the Federal Gov., all apprentices must [ or are strongly encouraged] to join the Army reserve. Some kind of a sweetheart deal. Makes me think, but not too much, I get a headache. Bob

The company you speak of is French I believe and have been working on the pipeline for sometime.
The company I work for supplies them and from what I understand they are on schedule.
Poor maintainance is a regular thing in PNG what ever company is involved. That is the norm plus equipment is used in extreme conditions. The guys who brought Renault in knew there was no support, a positive is he'll be earning a lot of money and no where to spend it in Moro

The same applies to Land Rovers here and us who own one You have to have your whits about you!

    Cheers Jerry:

I've spent many a nights at the Moro operation, I used to fly the staff there to and from Moresby. It pretty safe, accommodation is in containers but they used to be more than adequate, the food was great.

It was one of the places we used to fly to that felt way safer than Pt Moresby. Hope he enjoys his adventure.

    Cheers

Thanks, Jerry, that fills in a few gaps in our information. The lad doesn't say much, he did say the money was very good. He's working for it, but he's a good man, doesn't mind putting the effort in. The daughter is in her last year of a teaching degree, and their plan is for her to go bush for a couple of years, [ Mt Isa they're thinking about at the moment], he is trying to get as much varied experience as he can, with the thought of working in the mines. The wifes sister lives in Mt Isa, her husband, who has passed away, sadly, worked in the mines, then for a Finnish company suppliying mine equipment. Her children, & spouses, work in mining from Blackwater to Mt Isa, so there could be a leg in there. Not a bad plan.

However, the main reason this ones a keeper, is whilst in the Army reserve, he works on LAND ROVERS ! and, when/if they go bush, he's goung to buy a defender. They want to do a lot of travel, and I have kindly offered to let him garage his defender here whilst they're away, just one of the sacrifices I am prepared to make towards their married bliss. [ hope mini SWMBO doesn't read this] Bob

Thanks Mike, I will pass that on to my daughter. She will appreciate that info. He is the type of young man who will be loving it.They are working from 5.30am to 5.30 pm, he rang the daughter the other night & said he gets up at 4am & goes to the gym before work. The only negative for him is, I believe it's a dry camp. Wont do him any harm. Bob

Apart from being away from home, it sounds ideal Bob. Going to the gym every day, and no grog, is certainly going to do him more good than harm.

Not something you can do forever, working away from home like that, but worth doing for a secure financial future.
