any spotlight etc mounted to a vehicle must not be fitted rear of the plane of the headlights of a vehicle...this is in ADRs and therefore a national standard, although it may not be enforced much be aware that it could be at any time...

Hi Digger and first off, the ADRs have been changed and they now allow for roof mounted driving lights, and we can thank Jeep for getting the ADRs changed.

Next ADRs are not national standards, they are advisory only, and only become law in any given state if that state adopts the ADR as a law.

Most states have now adopted the latest ADRs covering driving light fitments.

BTW, QLD has never had height limits for driving lights. But you will need to see what the law is in each other state to see whether they are legal or not, in that state.



Hi Kevin and I have been running roof mounted driving lights for over 30 years now and up until my latest vehicle, I have always run both bumper/bull bar mounted driving lights as well as the roof lights.

I find the roof lights are just so much better than bumper mounted lights that I have not bothered fitting bumper mounted driving lights to this vehicle.

One word of warning, if you fit roof mounted lights, just remember you have them mounted before you try going into under cover parking.

I run roof mounted lights on my Classic and have had no issues with any potential law in forcement.

The wiring runs to the drivers side and down the A pillar, then under the guard and into the engine bay. Not the prettiest, but it works.

When I install mine, I plan to have the wiring run down the side of the snorkel to hide them a bit and then in to engine bay.

I had roof lights on my old Defender. I ran the wiring up through my snorkel along the guttering and onto the light bar.







One thing I can recommend is fit them as far back on your roof as possible. The closer they are to you windscreen the more glare you get on the dash/bonnet which is a real bugger when driving at night.



With the lights set back this far I still had the first 100mm of my bonnet lit up

Couple of options...

1 - On Camels, they just drill holes in the roof & run the cables that way!
2 - The G4 cars ran them down the snorkels (in much the same way Jock has them). It's nice & neat but just remember to seal the grommets!!
