1998 Disco is a great buy, and there is vairious opinions as to the
reliability of the 4.0 V8 compared to 3.9V8i although if PhillipA says they are
the same, he'd be the one I'd rely on for an explanation as to the reason for
    this.
Well I didn't say they were the same, just the capacity. I was just being a smart arse anorak.

The Disco 2 is much more sophisticated in the engine management than a Disco 1. The D2 Thor is a Bosch Motronic with up to date ECU with memory, ecu multi coil control, and it even varies the injection duration between cylinders depending on the drop in revs between cylinders. The upshot is considerably better fuel economy. However unrelated to the injection there was a batch of D2 4 litres that suffered loose sleeves , but you would be unlucky to get one now as nearly all have failed.

The D2 is much more computer controlled than a D1 with can bus communication by the ECU with the auto, with adaptive programs, lock up in 3rd and 4th, Manual mode in low range etc.

The D2 also has Electronic Traction Control, and downhill assist.

    Regards Philip A

4.0 is also a 4 bolt main block where the 3.9 is a 2 bolt main block.

    this is all great information!!

    i appreciate everyones input.

ill have a look into some current discussions about lifting the disco. see what is reccomended etc.

first thing i done was remove the rear muffler for a bit of note, but the MASSIVE 40 Litre muffler in the middle might have to go.. maybe just put a hotdog or 2 in to take the bark out of it.

    Thumbs up

Don't go to beserk with the muffler. I have a '93 3.9 and have had the rear muffler removed and the large centre one replaced with an offset sports muffler and beleive me that is LOUD! If you went anything more than that it would be too loud to drive without it giving you a headache. As far as the bullbar goes, i'm not 100% sure if they are interchangable, but I'm sure you could adapt one to fit if need be, but personally I would hunt for a D1 bar to suit, there are plenty around and probably will be cheaper. As far as suspension I have a 2" body lift and 2" springlift with long travel shocks. The suspension is "Terrafirma" branded stuff and find it excellent quality at a reasonable price. Good luck.

    Cheers,

    Vinnie

Does your D1 have SRS airbags. If so, you need to get a bar that is airbag compatable

yeah i know, we put a 2.5" stainless on my mates Silverado. with a hotdog on each Bank, and it was terrible,
we fitted another hotdog each bank and a balancer and it was 100%

Q1.? do you have Extractors? past cars, only 4cylinders, have improved fuel economy.
if it was less restricted, i would probably find i would rev it LESS, to get it going, or to make it sound like a V8 (sorry i sound like im 14y.o)

Q2.? Body lift... that would be the next thing on the list. does steering/ loom/lines etc need modifying? and do you do that first before spring lift? or do the spring towers just get modifyed?

i know its not going to be an overnight thing, and ill do as much research as i can before jumpping in.
but your help has been awesome!!
