    1998 v8i disco, series 1 or 2?

    hey all im back.

after i got my 91 v8i which i originally only purchaced for $2100 registered in Tas around 2 years ago souly to strip and bolt the 3.5 in a Datsun ute, i Quickly fell in love!!!
i decided to sell because it had a high-tide some point in its life and had a few electrical related problems which i had mostly fixed. aswell as no ABS, and general issues. nothing that would bother me too much but planned to move to NSW and didnt think it would pass stricter Inspections every year.

fully regretting not keeping it and just keeping it in TAS rego, i worked my way back into the rover family, tossing up between a Rangey or a Disco.

    NOW:::
    i purchaced a 1998 3.9 v8i Manual Discovery. 251xxxkms
great interior with roof starting to sag, exterior quite neat a few dings and scratches.
    $3200
i was under the impression that Series 2 was Post 1997, starting 98, but now im not sure after looking for lift kits etc.

Question 1. is it Series 1 or 2, and any other codes it may be known as,

Question 2. was this a good/average/poor price range?

Discovery 2 is 1999 onwards in Australia, and the engine was designated as a 4.0, even though it was only a few cc different to the D1.

So what you have is a D1.

Price, without seeing it, seems to be about right.

No CCs actually . Still 3950Cc.
The story goes that the LR marketing people felt that they had to match the advertised CCs of the Jeep Cherokee, heaven knows why!

    Awesome, thanks guys...

discos are soo cheap for what you get.. its crazy.

is there any advantages to the series 2? do they all have Air assist rear springs? i dont think i would keep them anyway.

but mechanically and 4x4 capabilities... are they any "better" ?

at this stage i only want to lift it a couple inches, bigger shoes, bullbar and side bars..

Some Disco2's have rear air suspension (SLS).

Mechanically and for 4x4 they are better with the exception of departure angle and if you haven't had CDL activated in the Disco2.

you miss the D1 for what reason??

i was abit upset after i thought id bought a D2.. but i think now its probably better for what ill do anyway.

ALSO... will a D2 bullbar fit?
because ive found an ironman winch bar with spotties and SRS compliant quite cheap.

ALSO 2... Fuel economy (or lack there of) ? i put $110 of 95octane (75ltrs) how many Kms should i hope for, or expect?
ive told myself 400kms, but that could decrease untill im over the sound of the v8 hahaha.

    1998 V8i series 1 or 2

The series 2 is slightly longer than series 1 and gave the rear seat occupants additional room, so rear doors and many underpinnings were diffrent so in essence they are two diffrent vehicles.

I don't believe that even the wheels are interchangeable.
I remember a write up that stated that only Landrover would make a new model look so similar to the previous model, but I believe that all good classic vehicles you can see the linage from the original to the current and land rover does do that in most models.

1998 Disco is a great buy, and there is vairious opinions as to the reliability of the 4.0 V8 compared to 3.9V8i although if PhillipA says they are the same, he'd be the one I'd rely on for an explanation as to the reason for this.
I had a 1996 V8i Disco and I believe you cannot buy better value for a true 4WD that in standard form is quite, comfortable and will go anywhere.

The D1 an excellent starting point and accessories new and second hand are resonable in price so have fun modifying your new toy

    Cheers

Just feel it was a more simple creature, where to me simplicity = less to go wrong, not that the d2 has acted up but we do have weeping headgaskets, at just over 100xxxkm, which may or may not require action (work in progress with my mechanic, hes trying something that will be completed at our next 5k service and we'll decide after that), but then dear old d1 leaked everywhere BUT the gaskets lol... so it may be Im looking through rose tinted glasses
