    Statutory write-off question

    Hi everyone,

Apologies as this is not a Land Rover question but there may be some knowledgeable people who may know the answer to this one.

Can a vehicle that has been statutory written off be re registered in another state? I have the option of buying a small 2004 isuzu truck that has been statutory written off but it has only minor damage so I cant understand why they have written it off. It has been hit at the front and broken the lights and dented the front paneling but the windscreen is not even broken and the chassis is not bent. The vehicle is an easy fix with a new bullbar, front panel and lights all that's required. It was registered and written off in NSW but I am in Qld so is it possible to re register the vehicle in Qld or is this not possible?

    Thanks in advance.

    Deefa, Stat right off

Not an expert on this, but some right off`s can be regestered. You need proof of the repairs done to bring it to roadworthy standards, what damaged caused it to be ritten off, proof ownership, Vin Number not Damaged, and check with QLD motor vehicle regulations. Double check the chassie is not a little bit bent.
Just a note on Damaged Vin numbers, should any of it be unreadable, then the vehicle will need to be cleared by Stolen Vehicle`s section of your police force, before getting it regestered.

    Cheers

As far as Im aware a statutory write off cannot be re-registered anywhere in Australia, the vin numbers get cancelled too.
Water immersion is a statutory write-off so could explain the little damage.

If it was written off in NSW then my understanding it is written off forever, everywhere.

... generally correct , but not stictly correct

    Written-off vehicles < Registration < www.rta.nsw.gov.au

there are a large number of "statutory writeoffs" going through the NSW auctions now which would have been considered to be quite repairable not long ago

suits the insurance companies and the dealers I expect (and puts everybody else's premiums up)

Thanks for that - that is certainly different to the hype that was going on when the new rules came into effect. So it looks like that if you are prepared to jump through a few hoops it is still doable.

    Although that page says:

"You must have been the registered operator of the vehicle 28 days prior to it being written-off"

...so I guess that means you can only buy back your own car at auction if you want to repair it, otherwise buying someone else's write off at auction means all you have is a pile of parts

There are two types of Right Off's
One is a Statutory Right Off . To the best of my Knowledge can NOT be re-registered. Even in another state. So no Re-birthing of cars.
Two is a Repairable Right Off. Can be Re-registered. Needs engineers report among other things.
    Hope this helps.

Not in the subject state of NSW - prior to when the rules changed a little while back there was the two categories as you mentioned but with the new rules there are no longer Repairable rightoffs - except if the circumstances mentioned above are met.
