    So I am driving a Volvo again.

    On Wednesday arvo, I got the check engine light on the way home from work - no unusual symptoms from the engine, until a few moments later it went in to "limp home mode". So on Thursday down it goes to Melbourne City Land Rover on a truck (again, :banghead.

    Thursday arvo, LR ring to say it is ready to collect. Friday morning, I ride the train to Melbourne to collect it. At the dealership, I am told that LR Australia are concerned about the car as it has been towed twice in a fortnight and want to know if I have been abusing it. I am told that the fault was the MAF sensor connector getting water in it and corroding the connection. I am told that this is my fault for driving through water and mud. I asked him what a Defender is designed for. He said that he understood but that I must have been exceeding the fording depth to get water in the MAF sensor. (The sensor is located above the air box, just underneath the bonnet)

    I told him that this was ridiculous, because if I had been in water up to that sensor, the car would have been flooded and a write - off. He said yeah. I asked then how he thought the water got there. He said that the tyres must flick water up. So I said, "That sounds like a design fault then." At which point he decided he wanted to change the subject and get me out the door.

    Ten k's down the highway home, check engine light. Back to LR. Suddenly they are very friendly and apologetic (a noticeable change in attitude!) Here have this Volvo, we will call you when we've fixed it.

    I used to have an old '75 Volvo 244 & I took it through some pretty deep water at times so you should be right

    I've owned a bunch of old Volvos.......and I certainly plan to keep one on the road when I get my hands on a Landy!
    Nice knowing there is a car in the yard that cost less than $500 yet will always fire up and willingly go....and you'd be surprised where I've got a bog standard 240!!!

    Bugger - that's no good mate. They probably just assumed you were 'abusing' the Deefer because of how it looked when they first had it.

    Hope they get it all sorted soon and that you are right for the Winter camp.

    An old Volvo will go forever, just like an old Landy. It's these new ones you have to watch. Hope you get it sorted ASAP. BTW, what model Volvo?

    Are the Volvo still coming with this as a standard accessories for the rear window deck ?



    No, I just was stirring the pot, I used to have a 244 sedan many years ago until it start leaking oil very badly from the camshaft seal at the back of the engine.

    It is a delightful S50 wagon.

    In other new, yesterday LR called to let me know that it "should" be ready to collect today . . .

    Camshaft seal at the back can go, I've had the one at the front pop out, they also spit crank seals.
    99.99999% of the time the reason is the flame trap in the engine breather has clogged up and been left, eventually they pop one of the seals out and commence marking their territory.......
    New flame trap is $3.......new rear main seal is $30, Labour to remove engine to fit it is several hundred.......
    I put a new flame trap in every year or two!

    Finally got my Defender back!

    On Friday, I was speaking to one of the persons in the Service department. I mentioned to him that I had read on the UK Defender Forum that some Pumas had experienced a Check Engine Light and a MAF Sensor Code due to the intercooler hose clamps being tightened so far that they cracked the hose, releasing boost pressure.

    "I've never heard of that before," he said, "You really can't believe everything you read on the internet. The problem was caused by the corroded MAF Sensor connector." (not his exact words, but you get the point)

    On Monday, a different man from the Service department called to ask my permission to drive the vehicle home that night to give the car a good test drive. They had now replaced the MAF Sensor, and they just wanted to make sure that they had it right. I now told this guy about what I read on the UK Defender Forum about the intercooler hose.

    "I've never heard of that happening before," he said, "Besides, we are pretty sure that we've fixed the problem with the new MAF Sensor. You can't believe a lot of the crap you read on the internet. We will ring you first thing tomorrow to let you know it is ready to collect." (again, not exact wording)

    Tuesday Morning:
    0800h: No call.
    0900h: No call.
    0930h: I ring the dealership to ask about the car's progress. Am told I will get a call back "straight away"
    1000h: No call.
    1030h: I ring the dealership again to find out what is going on.
    "We have actually just ordered a new intercooler hose. We should have that this afternoon and it will be ready to collect by 3pm."

    So now my car is finally fixed, and working perfectly. Apparently you can believe some crap you read on the internet. If they had just bothered to check the intercooler hose like I suggested to them on Friday, I would have had my car four days earlier.

    Using/abusing a Defender off road can crack the intercooler hose
