Any gas fitters? Buying a USA made LPG water heater for Aust: Legal?
If I wanted to buy an instant gas LPG water heater from the USA that was certified to:
- ANSI Z21.10.3
- CSA 4.3
am I going to have any certification issues with the gas fitter here in South Australia installing this?
I am guessing there are a bunch of regulations that might control this.
Who would I ring to check this out - Govt agency? Trade association?
Wouldn't like to buy it and then find out that no-one will connect it up, or that it is not legal to our standards! Or do I just install it myself?
Thanks
David

Household gas eaters have different rules to vehicles. I'd try ringing Lenswood Gas Centre (8389 8400), Cambridge's (8391 1688) at Mt Barker or Thomas Gas (8339 2388) at Aldgate.

It's for fitting to a vehicle.
I'll give Thomas a call. Used to have an account with them.
Thanks

For domestic appliances, the plumber submits a COC ( Certificate of compliance) in Vic & there are similar forms in other states. Basically the plumber is stating the whole shooting match complies with the regulations. That includes the appliance. It's getting really tight nowadays, in previous years there were Imported Pizza machines etc, all hooked up, you pay the bill, who cares?. Not nowadays, most plumbers are scared that they will lose ( & they can) their certificate. The appliance compliance is there to stop any shonky bunging any burner into anything they want. You can get individual approvals for one off installations, I have done so in my job, but they are always large industrial installations & the authority is ( In Vic) Energysafe.
International compliance means diddly in Australia, we usually have tighter compliance guidelines. It took years of lobbying to get automatic international recognition for BBQ Cylinder compliance. Previous to that you had to send 1% sample in for testing out of each shipment & wait 2-3 weeks before approval to distribute to the public. I am not 100% up to date but doubt that now applies to appliances. Oh, also there is separate section in AG601 regarding vehicle installations, plenty on cylinder location, piping, flues & appliance location but nought on appliance compliance requirement, but maybe its in another book.
Cheers, David

After a few phone calls, I'm thinking the simple route is just to get one that's got Australian compliance, even though the reliability factor is not as good as the USA one I was thinking of.
I'm even thinking that a bog standard Rinnai Infinity 16 might worth a go.... even though it is not specifically designed to be fitted to a vehicle.

Hi Spud , any gas appliance that is fitted in Asu/Nz .has to be approved . No gas council approved No . No plumber/gas fitter can issue you a compliance certifacate . Have you thought about a caravan hot water heater , they should comply , Sorry mate it is illegal to install your self ...

Hi Jim, Yep, I spoke to a Gas Fitter today about this and I know that I can't install it myself. I am planning on getting all the items in place (such as cylinders, stove, heater, electrics, etc) and get the gas fitter to plumb it all up so I can get the required certificate for registration.
