to save smashing the rear windows, I thought he might have attached the rope to those roof bars.

Obviously not worried about the vehicle - most likely in response to a council law that crap cannot be left on the beach.
However a bit of work with some shovels behind the car to remove the sand hump would have resulted in minimal additional damage when pulling it out.

Brilliant idea. For forward recovery just wind front windows and attach strap around the A pillar. Side recovery front and rear window down & strap round B pillar. Why didn't I think of this!
