The Freelander is not related (except by manufacturer) to any of the Defender, RR, Disco Landrovers, but is closer to mainstream car design than any of these, probably best described as a "softroader", although it would have to rate in the upper echelons of these. Describes as a "company saver" by reason of its home market sales, it has struggled to find a niche in Australia.

A big mistake that they didn't rename it LR2 as they did in the US. It really needed to distance itself from the Freelander 1. Most non Land Rover people are scared by the name. Mine is an excellent car and better off road than everyone thinks it is. Most will rarely go off road though.

Freelander is such a poncey name and they didn't do much better with Evoque either. LR2 is more manly, a few letters and a number, no need to prattle on with vowels and crap.

Aston Martin is up to DB9 and it"s taken quite a few years. Subaru has the XV that doesn't even have a number yet...even better.

Elder bro that lives in Zurich has just bought a diesel FL2 HSE. Reckons it's a nice car and is now waiting to see if it'll be able to find it's own way back to the stealers, just like each of the 10 or 11 top of the woz Rangies him and his Mrs. have had over the years.

Evoque should have never worn the Range Rover badge, LR yes but RR no.
