    Flexible hose failure (non Auto)

A friend of mine got his house flooded out on Friday after a flexible hose let go in the middle of the night and he woke up with 2" of water through the house.
The plumber reckons its due to the quality of the flexi hose and cheap imports from China are all thats generally available these days. The insurer said they are getting heaps of claims for the same (one third of flood related claims due to flexy hose's) and are going to be adding a clause to the policy to say the hose's should be replaced at least every 5 years.
We have had ours in place for 11 years so assume they are the better quality ones, i still might convert to copper pipe though as it would be a big problem if one of these hose's let go when away on a trip etc.
I wonder if Enzed can make up a longer lasting alternative!
There is a standard but doubt the Chinese ones comply AS/NZ 3499:2006.

    Cheers

Turn the main cock off at the meter when you go away.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.

I have seen the results of one failing in a mates ensuite bathroom. Luckily there was a floor drain.

There should always be a tap at the wall so you can turn off the water before the flexi hose to make replacement easier, and so you can turn the water off if you are going away for a few days.

Thought about that but we have an automated garden watering system and pond top up so might have to just turn off at the individual valves at each sink, if I can remember!

There are different hoses available, the inner materials are what varies. The cheaper ones are rubber, very thin rubber that relies on the outer to stop swelling as well as mechanical damage.

That is what I'd term as one of the cheaper ones, having a rubber inner. However the damage to the outer if it wasn't opened up for the photo (clarify?) indicates some sort of initial mechanical damage that would have led further to the failure of the inner.

The other type has a harder plastic hose that doesn't rely on the outer for strength as the rubber does, in fact the rubber hoses without an outer swell dramatically and burst very quickly
