    Irresponsible Dog Owners.

We have 27 acres of rocky hills, 2 creeks & a dam. For the past few months we have let our domestic ducks & geese on the dam to do their thing with the wild ducks & other water birds.
This week my wife heard a commotion & our dog barking, she went out & our dog was barking towards the dam, which can't be seen from the house, off she goes to find 2 large pig type dogs, 1 wearing a dog coat, in the dam trying to kill the 1 duck that they hadn't already killed.
She managed to yell at & throw rocks at the dogs until they took off up the hill, she also got a couple of phone camera shots of them.
So, we have 1 duck left, 1 duck & 2 geese killed, some very upset kids. By asking around my wife found out who the dogs belonged to & reported the incident to the police & council, the council came & saw us yesterday & were going to see the owner.
Unfortunately when all this happened I was in Mapoon, where some clown had burnt the Telstra Tower & shed, so had absolutely no contact with home. My wife was/is quite stressed & angry about it all, she wants to go to the owners, give them a gob full & demand recompense for the duck & geese. I reckon leave it to council? Maybe see a Legal Eagle? I don't want to create a situation where we/my wife could end up being in the poo.
    Opinions?

Leave it to the council for now and see how they handle it, if you arent happy with the outcome start planning some revenge.

The unfortunately end will be that perhaps the "offending" dogs will be destroyed instead of the owners

I am sorry for the lost of your birds, if you are planning to have free range birds or any other farm animals, I would recommend you to get a pair (not only one) of Great Pyrenean Mountain dogs fitted with a spike collar for their own protection.
They are capable of keeping dingos at bay and is in their nature to look after the farm animals.
I used to have one and is a fantastic breed and love children.

Whomever the dogs owners are, are fully responsible. These dogs have the taste for blood and unless locked up will continue to do this.
Its not your responsibility for fencing etc, its the owners of the dogs for them being able to access your property.
We have a similar problem except no maming going on, we have two dogs (on 3 acres), I often come home and there will be eight dogs in my yard, my neighbours can't understand why I want to dog proof my fences! Its not only to keep there dogs out, but to keep mine in.

I would have been very tempted to dispense swift justice on the spot.

Simply no excuse for letting dogs get out and cause havoc like that. Not in the country. Not in the city. Not anywhere.

my old man had this problem with his chooks. A dog got in and killed 2 or 3 before he managed to chase it off. The next time the dog came back my old man used meat and lured the dog in.. caught him and then chained him to his mailbox with a sign that read something along the lines of " IF this belongs to you, take him home and you're lucky i like dogs.... but if i see this dog in my chook yard again, it will be shot." Never seen it again.

I don't have a gun because of the kids & it all became a bit of a pain after Port Arthur so I sold the 2 I had.
The council did offer us a dog trap though, I have been thinking about this. They said they supply the trap, if it catches a dog we call them & the owner has to pay a small fortune to get the dog back.
My wife said the owner would probably just let it/them get put down.

Its a problem everywhere, the local paper this week had a report that a cocky out at Wee Jasper had shot 4 hunting dogs attacking animals on his property, 3 had tracking collars on at the time. Police are looking for the owner of the collars......
The sooner hunting pigs with dogs is outlawed the better, the irresponsible idiots who do it for sport don't kill the pigs half the time anyway and they certainly don't do anything to reduce wild pig numbers and in some cases even make them worse by releasing caught pigs in convenient areas so they can hunt them.

Council will most likely issue compliance notices to keep the animal on their property, to make sure their enclosure is "proper and effective" check If the animals are registered.
If compliance notices are issued keep your camera at the ready as fines of $550 can be issued if the compliance notice is breached.
Take them up on the trap, once people in the area know there is a trap around all the dogs get locked up. any other questions just ask, I might be in the know Bout this area of local govt in your area
