Radar detectors are still legal over here Brian. There was some talk of following the eastern states and banning them a few year ago, but it never happened.

They are becoming less effective though, as more and more "speed detection" devices used by "government revenue raising contractors" are the fixed "mutanova's" hidden in the bushes. These use lazer beams which are still detectable, but by the time you have detected one, it's usually too late and you've passed through it. The "headlight flash" and warnings on UHF channel 40 are still the best warning you get about these.

The "radar detector" on my dash also warns if there is an emergency vehicle (fireys / ambulance) approaching you, plus some roadworks sites also transmit a warning signal to them, so they are not just there to avoid detection of speeding - and mine's a pretty old "Bell" unit. My son has a much more modern model with all sorts of whiz bang capabilities.

Anyway ................... who speeds in a Landrover.
    Cheers .........

These new hidden private speed camera devices seem a bit suss, but it isn't for revenue raising though right? Is that a WA thing only?

Nah ............. not for revenue raising.

One at the bottom of the hill just as the speed limit drops on the way into Bakers Hill on the way home Saturday. Other favourite spots are the railway station carpark at Meckering, and the level crossing between Cunderdin and Tammin where the speed limit drops from 110 to 80 for all of about 20 metres, and then back up to 110 again.

Makes you want to stick the bulbar into Nissan Xtrails whenever you see one on the road (contractor's vehicle of choice).

The cops on the highways here are pretty good. If you're a little over the limit, they'll generally just give you a flash of the headlights, or if they do pull you over, will usually just give you a chat and tell you to ease off a little (unless of course your speed is well over the limit). With the contractors in Xtrails though - there is no leeway. If you're even 5 k's over the limit, you will receive a ticket in the mail.

Nah ................. it's definitely not revenue raising.
    Cheers .........

You have top notch cops! I was done at 52 in a 50 zone in Victoria, no points lost due to NSW license, but HTF do they measure 2kph?

I could imagine the distraction for everyone on the road when they see these Xnails, surely that is far more dangerous than motorists doing 5kph over the limit? Which also would be virtually not measurable.

We have those vans here in the for something like 20 years - despite being obvious they seem to do good business.

A while back a van was parked doing its business and a couple of young men creep up to the vehicle and quietly removed the number plates and then bolted them to a similar vehicle then sped repeatedly back and forth through the speed trap racking up a few thousand in fines with the automatically generated fines being sent to the relevant government authority.

It won't be long before the Point to Point cameras are up and running on the Hume, now that it's finished.

    Something to look forward too
