So someone who has not bought or sold anything in the past 12 months would have a feedback score of 0?

No, you retain your feedback number or score even if you do not buy or sell - ie 650 or whatever. The 100% positive bit is what drops off after twelve months if you have no activity. As soon as you start buying or selling it starts up again - the percentage bit. After you receive at least 10 detailed seller ratings from buyers you get to see the little stars about the transactions also. They are not directly linked to particular transactions so you cannot determine who marked you down on postage time (out of your hands really).

So you get to keep your total feedback as a member; there is also a panel with Recent Feedback ratings of the last twelve months (Positive, Neutral or Negative) and your Detailed Seller ratings (after 10 buyers or more leave them) for the last twelve months.

There was a proposal by ebay to remove the older feedback also but there was such an outcry that it was dropped. The big complaint of members at one time was that there is no recognition of multiple purchases - if you buy fifty items from one seller over a period of time there is only one advance on your feedback score and one for the seller even though you leave feedback for each transaction. That may have changed but I don't look on the ebay forums any more.

I have only performed one transaction on e-bay. I sold my wife's car. A guy won the auction and turned up to collect and offered me half his bid price. I told him to go forth and multiply. I wish I could have left bad feedback for him. Put it up again and the next winner came, paid in full, and took it away, no dramas.

As a seller you can tick the positive feedback button but in the text bag out the buyer - not as good as negative feedback but many sellers do read the feedback and can make decisions based on the actual content of the feedback.

And ebay "can" suspend your account as an infraction so better to leave no trace.

It is ridiculous that the system that was based on trusting far away partners has been emasculated as ebay seeks more and more sellers - who are all supposed to be beyond reproach. After all, the buyer pays their final value fees in the purchase from the seller so there is little comeback on a dodgy buyer. Even if booted off they register again but some using modern smarty-pants technology (that I will not put up here for obvious reasons) have gotten around eBay's very thorough matching, checking and security system.

Not if what I say is true - as in XYZ won this item and did not pay. Is a fact.

Despite what Ebay says they cannot take any real action against defaulters - suspending their account - wow, if they are habitual they will more than one account anyway.

    Hi Brian,

It's a good system with very few problems - mostly the humans. If you were at a Swap Meet and not forever vigilant there are thieves and shoplifters hit small businesses all the time. So there are fraudsters on the internet. Would be good if the ability to leave negative feedback was re-instated.

I had a guy once buy an item and after being invoiced he realised he knew me. So, he asks that I take the item to a market we both attended. When I asked him at the market for the amount he bid he wanted a make a new offer with a significant discount as he knew me. I told him there was an underbidder and I would let him (the underbidder) take it instead. Not too graciously the "friend" coffed up. They are out there.

Yes Garry, too true! I have heard from other sellers that some of these individuals then report your items also so it becomes an ongoing battle between the seller and ebay that is not worth worrying about.

If you relist the item and get your fees (if any) back you just explain that the top bidder defaulted.

Why didn't he just claim back through Paypal - they are good in that respect.

You do know that Gumtree is owned by Ebay and that you have even fewer protections in Gumtree than you do in ebay.
