Thread: bizarre foods

India's a great place. Food is awesome, but falling sick would have inconvenienced many so we had to eat in hotels.



But what's the most bizarre thing anyone here has eaten?


I'll start the list with raw seal blubber from a freshly killed seal in a remote fjord in East Greenland

I had a McChicken, no idea what is in it, and pretty sure I risked my life.

Also, I had crickets in Cambodia, well I think they were crickets, or cockroaches. Kind of tasted like stringy crispy chips, not bad really.

I've eaten a translucent worn as thick as your finger that lives in mangrove trees in Arnhem Land, raw squid guts served as a side dish with my beer in Japan, dog (by accident!) in Thailand, snake, beetles, ants, fish eyeballs, stingray, sea cucumber, crickets, and many more such oddities. When I think about it I truly believe the weirdest thing I've had is milk!

I've eaten a number of local "delicacies" in my times working in China and Vietnam, including insects on a stick, sea creatures that looked like big centipedes, bits of animals that in Australia would be called landfill, but the wierdest experience I had was in the oldest Peking duck restaurant in Beijing, where you were handed a beautiful card after eating your meal with the name and details of the duck you'd eaten!

I've eaten pigeon in Vietnam.... spicy crunchy, not bad.
I've also had the misfortune of eating Durian...lets not go there....

Durian? Smeeeeeeeelllllllly!

Most hotels in Singapore won't allow you to eat them there.

We noticed lots of signs in vietnamese hotel rooms prohibiting smoking, prostitutes, and Durian
It was my first night in the country, and I got to try some.
Didn't like it at all, so was then offered Icecream to get rid of the taste...
....it was Durian Icecream....
Other than that the food there is great

That's a coincidence, because in Singapore I was offered a Durian to take away the taste after smoking a prostitute!
