Exactly what I was thinking of, whilst sussing out towns like Blackall & Barcaldine it occured to me they would probably be stuffed if it wasn't for Grey Nomads propping up the economy, I think the locals 'tolerate' them because of this.

Having lived in a tourist town I also know the other side of the argument with all those bloodty tourists taking up all MY parking places, and filling up all the bloody coffee shops.

    Well done Gav!

Why not start a thread on the differing political parties from state to state, and how good/bad the road conditions and facilities are?

    Cheers,

What I love most about living here in summer, is not the 45-50 degree heat, not the storms, not perving on the scantily clad females getting around, but for at least 4 months of the year, sanity returns to the roads as the travellers **** off down south.

They complain that travelling at the posted limit is less economical.
If you cant afford the fuel bill, why on earth are you driving a big $$ 4wd with a taj mahal on wheels dragging along behind you? A falcodore and pop top camper works just as well, at a fraction of the cost.

They complain that they dont feel comfortable driving at the posted limit.
If you dont feel comfortable driving at the posted speed limit, WHY? Is your chosen car/caravan combination unsuitable, poorly loaded, in poor condition, or are you simply incompetent to drive your rig without posing a danger to all other road users? If any of those factors is the case, WHY are you on the road like that to start with?

They complain that travelling at the posted speed limit restricts their ability to see the countryside.
GET OFF THE BLOODY ROAD, BREW UP AND ENJOY THE SCENERY MORE OFTEN THEN

Honestly, if I live long enough to retire, I can only hope I can afford to buy a gutless 4wd to tow a Taj Mahal on wheels, then I'll clear off down to Victoria and South Australia and live out my days crawling around the place at 30km/h..... and on the back of the van? "Queenslanders Revenge"
geez, glad i didn't bump into you last week........i have a few grey but an only forty and do a bit of touring......my defender was running a tad hot last week towing to camper trailer so i backed off to keep it under 100degrees....yep 90km/hr at time, OMG how dare me......sure some cars and trucks had to overtake us....but that life

I agree with you Kelvin, I do not know have the chance to drive on the old Hume or Pacific hwy behind an old Kombi.
During the 70's I remember the VW vans holding the traffic for many kilometers and there was no hope in overtaking them.
We do not have these problems now.

Gold Coasters used to say about the wintering Victorians that they arrived with a $10 note and one pair of clean undies and never changed either.

That's because old Kombis can be worth up to $60k or $80k nowdays and are only brought out from the garage for special displays.

    Well said, Sprint.

During my professional driving career I was often driven to a state of intense frustration, almost simmering near-rage at times, by caravanners. Particularly so on the Pacific and Bruce Highways with the long stretches of near impossible overtaking.

If you must wander the highways with a van combination then get one that will comfortably and safely maintain the speed limit at GCM on a 3% grade. Next acquire the necessary skills and temperament to drive at the speed limit and then do so. This way you won't have heavy vehicles queued up behind you flashing lights and blowing air horns. You might not be on a time table but sure as hell the line haul and delivery drivers and sales reps are. So either speed up or get out of the way. Show some courtesy to other road users.

Get good mirrors and look in them occasionally. Yes, more frequently than every half hour or so. If you see two or three vehicles queued up behind your van then move over or pull up to allow the followers past.
