Hi, I have come across reference to the 2.5ltr Turbodiesel manufactured between 1986 - 1989. I guess this makes it the one before the 200tdi. Was this engine released in Australia and if so does anyone know where I might get one?
From what I know the vm 2.4 and 2.5 were the engine prior to the 200/300, The 2.4 was used up to the 90's untill the new 2.5 became the new flavor
The engine in the pic is unfamiliar so cant really help there
The 2.5 litre turbo diesel fitted to UK and EU spec vehicles was never released in Australia,we had the Izusu 3.9 diesel fitted to Aust spec vehicles. There may have been a few vehicles privately imported that could still be around, the first Landrover built diesel sold here was the 200TDI followed by the 300TDI
From memory those 2.5 turbo diesels had an LT77 transmission in them,as fitted to 5 speed Range Rovers of the mid 80's,the V.M.2.4 diesel was fitted to the RRC when diesel was specified, but there were not a lot sold here, the spares situation was a little confused as the V.M.was a marine diesel, many were converted to take a 300TDI.
One 2.5 litre VM made it's way here for testing purposes. It was an evaluation car while I was at JRA in 1990. It performed a lot better than the 2.4 but I think JRA were put off importing more VMs by then.
I don't know where it ended up, probably NZ.
The 2.5 turbo-diesel was based on the traditional 2.5 litre N.A diesel that had its heritage from the 2 litre diesel way back in 1957. It had lots of problems as Tusker suggested and was the reason that the British Ministry of Defence stayed with the 2.5 N.A. in the Land Rover 90s (which also had its share of problems).
By all counts you wouldn't retrofit a 2.5 N.A. with the turbo externals, you'd go straight to the 200TDi.
You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Ok, here's a pic of the Land Rover 2.5 Turbo Diesel. It was also known as the 19J. It had nothing to do with VM. It was also given a bad wrap, as people used to neglect it like they did with the N/A 2.5. It was similar to the 2.5 N/A but had several differences. The pistons and exhaust valves were different. The compression ratio was lower, and the block was different. The breather system was larger to cope with increased airflow etc. the early engines were not without their problems, but the block got a makeover in 88, and these were the engines to have. They were also fitted with a Garrett turbocharger. It was never going to be a TDi, as it was still indirect injection and not intercooled, but it did lead the way to the Tdi's. (it was however a lot quieter than a Tdi). I ran a Turbo D in an 88 Series 1 coupled to an LT77. I intercooled it, and opened the pump up to suit, and it went very well! They never found their way down under, as the Isuzu was already an option. Hope this helps!!
Thanks for the info aswell great thread hope you do find one if you are really keen alot of the VM parts can be found in the UK/NZ maybe your's aswell. NZ offers VM heads manufactured and billet in construction for reasonable $ so keep looking
From what I know all the bad raps come to these type engines for the lack of decent cooling in our country, After all it ain't England here.

A mate has imported an ex-MoD 90 and is considering retrofitting the 200TDi, which will have problems fitting the 24V alternator for the radio system.
You sound like you're saying the 2.5TD is O.K. Would you still suggest fitting a 200TDi or would it be possible to retrofit the TD externals to the 2.5 N.A.successfully?
