Defender 90 second spare wheel mount.

I don't know anything about mounting a wheel inside the cab, however have you seen what the Rijidij fella has done, building a dual wheel carrier for the rear crossmember? One of the fellas on this forum (can't remember who off the top of my head) has it on his 90, and has posted some photos on here somewhere.
Maybe an option for you, I have seen other wheel carriers made by Rijidij, and they all look top quality, one of his carriers is something I will be looking into next year, if/when my bank account balance gets a bit healthier...

SWB Series LandRovers had the spare mounted behind the bulkhead, running across the vehicle, this keeps the wheel much lower than if it was mounted on the wheel arch. If you still want it on the side, a spare wheel bracket from a 130 HPCU may be able to be adapted, they had the spare in a similar position as you are after.

    Cheers, Mick.

I think you will find that pursuant to the Australian Design Rules it is illegal to mount a spare wheel on the bonnet of recently manufactured vehicles. To do so would render your vehicle unroadworthy which would likely render your insurance void, as well as putting you in a precarious position in any serious MVA. Can any one advise that it is not illegal to do so?

My understanding is the same as you Karl.

It would if it was possible to do legally be a useful option.

It wouldn't be too hard to come up with an internal mount to mount behind the passenger seat I wouldn't think, but I haven't seen any done.

My first SIII 88 came with the spare wheel mounted behind the bulkhead but also had the mounting fixtures on the bonnet. The tyres were 600x16 (if I remember correctly). When I changed to 750s the spare was just too big for the back.

This thread raises the important question: do you really need to carry two spares when travelling in remote areas? When I had tubed tyres, flats were a semi-regular occurence. With tubeless, a very rare event. Other's thoughts on the issue?

    Cheers
