    2014 Wanderings

    Righteo Peoples

This is one of those useless threads

Difference is - I actualy HAVENT made the decision on what to do. I WONT be doing what I was going to do before asking. And I am ACTUALLY going to consider what the board says...

Maybe, just maybe (but I doubt it) this thread is not completely useless.

Sometime in August or perhaps Septemeber next year 2014 my wife and I are planning on a 3-4 week journey some place.

We did have our sights lined up on re-visiting the Simpson Desert. Our most recent sojourn to the Simpson was over 10 years ago. It was early in the season, the year after Lake Eyre did its thing with the Pelicans the wild flowers were, well, wild and the memories are still palpable. If K was to die tommorrow her ashes would be taken to the 4th swale east of big red, 1.5km south of the road... Anyway I digress.

After much reading/research on the 'Infallible Internet' it seems like most everywhere the whole "I have a 4wd and go bush" thang has overun the SImpson and it can get a little crowded, no campfires, dont leave the main route by more than 50m etc etc.
Should we savour the memories and not go back in what will be terrorist (sorry tourist) season?

    If not ... where?

Not too many corners on the Cape we havent visited.

The Pilbara/Kalkarinji and Canning are still on the list but 4 weeks is likely a little tight?

Perhaps a sojourn through the gulf, tangle with a croc on roper bar then on up towards Arnhem land (permits assuming). K worked in Nhuluns and Yirrkala many years ago but never explored out of the communities... I would even consider not taking the boat

Or do we just head to the desert and ignore the haters - find a little corner with no other punters, crack a glass of red, kick back and watch the heavenly hosts above????????

    Thoughts/ideas/suggestions

    Steve

PS well sorted 130, self reliant and more than happy to travel alone.

We were out there this year, 10 days without seeing anyone on The Madigan, you just have to be prepared to look at it a little differently. French Line is likely a 4WD Action fest, The Rig is much more sedate, The Madigan is truly remote travel at its best.

Inside, I hate to a be thread buster or whatever you may call it, but I notice your campfire. Alongside it is some local timber, clearly broken off from whatever sparse vegetation is in the area. This is exactly one of the problems that is occurring in all accessible areas of the simpson desert. The environment simply cannot sustain the continuous "raping" of the vegetation to support our desires for the attraction of the campfire. On our last trip we carried in , initially, a large quantity of cut timber , from a local cattle station, which by keeping the fire small, lasted us through to Birdsville, where we purchased a bag of firewood to keep us going. I don't want this to sound like a personal attack on you. I have mentioned it as a general observation and hope others may observe it. Firewood these days is available and bagged at nearly every servo and although a little costly and initially bulky is far better to carry and use than to continually strip local timber from shrubs and trees that cannot recover at the speed we are doing it.

I'm pondering next year as well. Did Gibb/Gunbarrel/Simpson in '05 & now thinking of Flinders Range area via Camerons Cnr.
I've got a couple of days head start on you geographically though

Best thing about The Desert is you can get away from idiots. No such luck on the internet.

The Hay River track is nice, not too many people and maybe just doable in 3 weeks from Cooktown?
