It's a few years since I left there, but anyway......

Unless you're travelling between the major cities, then taking the bus will take forever. Quite a few cheap deals used to be available on National Express.

Fuel price - they're paying about £1.35 a litre for diesel where my sister lives. That's $2.50! We are very lucky here.

For the trip up to Aberdeen, you may find that it works out more economical to fly. There's a couple of budget airlines that fly to Aberdeen.

You'll be able to do Aberdeen, Durham & Newcastle in one trip.

You might be better off hiring a car for the times when you need it. Most hire companies do special weekend rates and IIRC Enterprise have unlimited mileage on theirs.

Try the overland coaches, they usually have very competitive fares.

Having lived in the uk for a few years, getting anywhere by road can be a nightmare because of the traffic.

I used to fly or go by train so I arrived on time and relaxed

Depends on how many your going with as if a couple of you then hire a car and drive as it will be collectively cheaper than train or plane. Also freedom to see other stuff on the way.

You live in Australia. That makes everything in the uk local to you. So don't worry about distance.

As for traffic yeah pretty bad around the major towns around rush hour , but not much else the rest or in the countryside.
But that can depend on where you live here.
If you live in Sydney and Melbourne then your used to it. If you live in Alice Springs oh well your in for a shock.

I remember it could take up to 4 hours to drive thirteen miles through London on a Saturday morning, just to get on the motorway to go home

Away from the cities though the traffic won't be too bad, you may find that people drive a bit quicker too in the uk so be prepared, "mirror, signal, manoeuvre"

Keep tabs on your wallet and valuables in the cities, lots of pickpockets around especially in the tube stations.

Nowhere there is very far from anywhere else in the country. Remember Australians think 200 years is a long time. Poms think 200 k's is a long distance. Everything is bloody expensive there particularly accommodation much of which is quite sub-standard.
