BTW, DSG confusion seems mainly centred around the 6sp on diesel engines. Maybe it's shift points being different but petrol owners never report their box being confused by roundabouts.

It's very hard to find a used diesel i30. Owners have a death grip on them.
103TDI, 6 speed DSG Skoda Yeti.

No problem at round about for me. It did take a little to get used to though. You do need to prep a little before you want the gear change. About the point you'd usually be clutching in in a Manual, you start pushing the accelerator down and it'll change just right.

I hardly use "Sport" mode as it just revs more and as most would know it's pretty pointless reving a Diesel. You just want to ride the Torque wave.

If I'm going hard, I'll slip it to "Sport" mode coming into a corner as it will change down quicker, give a little bit of engine breaking and be ready to accelerate then I'll slip it to normal "Drive" mode about mid corner so it doesn't hold the gear, rev so high and it changes up quicker.

FYI why I chose the Yeti over the Tiguan. Some say the Yeti is a bit rough. Well that was to be expected as it run the same suspension as the Tiguan and it's 100kg lighter. I came from a WRX so I appreciated the sportier more rigid handling. The Tiguan had been updated to the 7 speed DSG when I was looking and I didn't like the 7 speed DSG. The changes were too smooth and it felt really electric. The Tiguan has better sound deadening so you could hear the motor or feel the gear changes. It's the first Auto I have owned since my first car (apart from driving several work automatics) so I really didn't like the feeling. The 6 speed needs to hold each gear just that little bit longer and then drop just that little bit lower in the revs, I just proffered the feeling of a proper gear change.

Something else interested is VW have better acceleration times for the old Tiguan 103TDI 6 speed DSG than Skoda have for the Yeti but the Yeti is 100kg lighter. God knows how that works.

Peugeot - wouldn't touch one of the newer ones
Renault - great cars until the break down and then .... ridiculous prices for parts if you can get them
VW - Can have some reliability issues, look at V5 1.9 TDI, gutless on paper, however the stong torque means the go fine. The 1.9 is old tech but gets very good economy and is super reliable. Go the 6 speed manual as well.

The Hyundai's are great as well not as nice to drive as the euros but heaps better than a Corolla or Nissan Tiida (biggest pile of poo ever).
The Ford focus interior is over the top styling wise but drives well.

MY 2008 Golf GT TDI DSG (98K now)has had some issues (starter motor, cam sensor) but drives great and performance wise out accelerates a V6 Commodore. The DSG needs familiarity and can be a little clunky at low speeds and the economy is good however it isn't great (average 7l/100). It still has the original front pads and had the rear pads and disks replaced at 85K. Parts are reasonable through Tooleys. NVH doesn't come close to the D4 but is much better than the Japanese cars in the same class.

I have never experienced DSG confusion on my DSG6 1.9 diesel in 100.000 km of driving. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but then on the other hand I'd love to pull the service history on a lot of the transmissions of complainants. I'd be willing to bet it has been lax.

I over hear so many cringeworthy comments at dealerships made by people who service to a price... "$300 for the DSG service... We'll do that next time" etc.

IMO if you can't afford the car's service schedule, you can't afford the car.

Why ?? Urban myth ?? I wouldn't touch one of those piece of **** land rover things either.

Just like Land rovers, you buy part on ebay uk .... I'd buy a modern renault no probs.... Especially if they haven't buggered them up with rock hard seats and suspension. Why do they think everyone wants to drive cars rock hard suspension and bloody ridiculously massive wheels with a bit of rubber painted on them. I couldn't give two ****s myself if it's the latest fashion. The cars drive a lot worse with huge wheels and tyres ( tell me last time you saw any sort of race/rally/drag/performance oriented vehicle with stupidly big wheels on it.... they don't 'cos it stuffs the handling up).

I'd probably be looking at a renault sport myself if I was forced to drive a small modern car ( **shudder** ).

I think I'd die or boredom if I had to drive an hi-undi or golf.

If you were closer, you're welcome to my Golf 09MY to drive 1.9 DSG, you've probably seen it advertised in your searches anyway

Can understand why. We would only sell ours to get a newer model wagon.

When we got ours we had seen the wagon version overseas but was told it wasn't coming to Australia. Guess what about 6 weeks after we took delivery the wagon is released in Oz Misses was not happy Jan. So next time it will be the Hyundai I30 diesel wagon for us.

80,000 km in 5 1/2 years still happy with it. Why so little kms. We have 3 other cars to choose from.

If you are looking at a car from Europe would say stick with Ford, Vauxhall or VW.

Used to work for a multi franchise dealer group. We had more warranty work for VW than either Ford or Vauxhall. That said none of these saw anywhere as much warranty work as Renault.

I have a 2005 Touran 2.0 diesel DSG with 140k miles on the clock which has never given any problems. Regularly see 58 MPG on the readout as an average consumption on a motor way run.

Would say to stay away from anything from France or Italy. It is unfortunate that the French have taken their products down market to compete with the Koreans however in chasing a lower price they have left out the quality and reliability which they used to have. Last good Peugeot was the 406. Peugeot/Citroen is bust and about to be sold to the Chinese.

Based on the European experience the choice is do you want the drive or quality. European cars will be nicer to drive as customers value this above reliability. Japanese or Korean will provide better reliability and last longer as their home market customers value this higher than the drive.
