Depends where you are!
First trip I made up through the centre in 1964, we (me and my brother) had left Port Augusta in the afternoon, and camped for the night a couple of hours later. Next morning, about ten miles up the track, there was a Holden ute with three blokes in it, stopped in the middle of the road.
Took about five minutes for us to diagnose the problem. They had been there for about twenty hours and we were the first vehicle. Took one of them into Pimba to organise a rescue. Could not take more as we were in the Series 2 88, with camping gear, and four jerricans of petrol and two of water in the back.
