Thread: Steering Box flush

A few weeks back I has a power steering pump **** itself and throw its pulley off and explode fluid everywhere. (1994/5 Defender 110) This was replaced by the good people at Ritter. Worked for a few turns then the steering got heavy, like as heavy as it is with the engine off. (No power steering) Ritter replaced the pump again free of charge thinking it could have been a dud. But a week later I hit a corrugated dirt track and same thing happened, No power steering. And it has stayed that way, its tough driving about town with not power steering.

I’m told its most likely metal filings from when the first pump broke that have got in the system and are jamming the steering box.

Question, can I flush the Box and pipes while its still on the car? And how, best way to go about it?
Or should I assume that its jammed and just get a new box? Found a new one from UK for $650 delivered.

Or if I remove the box can I open it up and clean it myself? I have no idea what’s inside or what would be causing it to stop assisting with my steering? I figure if im going to pull it out I may as well get the box as I have only had the car for a few years and don’t know how well it was looked after before me. (had been used to tow horse floats)
