Smile Where can I drive my dune buggy near Sydney?

    Hey everyone,

I've recently finished my P76 powered dune buggy.
It is definitely NOT registerable! Just a tube frame, 2 seats and a whopping big engine!

I've taken it for a short hoon on my folk's small farm, but want to have a decent drive of it now. I always had the intention of taking it to Stockton, but these are prohibited now. (Even though the Stockton website says you can drive dune buggy's in the RV area as long as you get The RV rego from the RMA, the RMA states that you cannot get RV rego for dune buggies - only motorbikes and quad bikes!)

So, does anyone know where I can take my unregistered buggy for a shakedown?

All I want is one good drive to get some video/photos before I sell it.
Not wanting rough 4x4 tracks, rather open/smooth trails or sand bowls/dunes.

I don't have have the time/$$ to get it CAMS approved, so race meets are out of the question.

Best bet would be private property. I'm 99% sure all NSW beaches/state forests / national parks require registration and insurance.

talk to the RMS about recreational rego (only for Stockton)

you'd have to live up there to justify the price and ADR's apply.

You can get condition rego for buggies on Stockton only, my buggy just goes on a trailer and basically tow it 400km from Sydney to the private properties in the family and flog it around there. Sydney Off Road Racing Club has a track somewhere, you may be able to join the club and use the track, I assume you'd need a CAMS licence but don't know for sure.

    Cheers

Can you post up some pics? I'm a bit of a die hard buggy fan

Mr LR, how did you go about it??

The RMS states that Dune Buggies are not considered Recreational Vehicles. Have a look at the 2nd dot-point under "Additional Vehicle Requirements" on this...
    http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registrati...on_vehicle.pdf

I tell you what - if a dune buggy isn't a recreational vehicle, then what is???

And this REALLY bugs me, because it states on a contradicting government website...

"You must obtain RTA conditional registration for all quad bikes, motor bikes, dune buggies and other recreational vehicles (RV’s) to ride/drive at Stockton Beach in the Worimi Conservation Lands (WCL)."

I haven't got any photos of it in its current state, but here's the most recent video... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUxoAKlXPhM]Scaring Mum in the V8 Dune Buggy - YouTube[/ame]

And here's one from way back when I first reassembled the engine after 2 or so years... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOk_XeYdqSE]Rover V8 Dune Buggy - P76 - timing set - YouTube[/ame]

    Hi Lachlan,

Mine isn't actually registered at all as its basically still in the design and development phase, just had a new front end and engine, it's a mini buggy using a 600 Yamaha road bike engine.

That RMS document has changed since I last saw it, used to include dune buggies, so I'm intrigued as to what the go is now, as with the new motor mine is more than capable of going on the dunes! So if you talk to anyone please report back here on it, I know a few years ago on the edge buggies forum a bloke had an issue as our buggies don't have chassis numbers, being home made, I assume you'd encounter the same problem, I'm not sure.

On another note, that buggy looks like a hoot! Plenty of usable horsepower I see! What transaxle does it use? I'm planning to put a 4.6 in my Rangie and the 3.5 with a blower would go well in a buggy I think!

    Cheers

Numbers are not a problem if its not to be road registered, just get some number stamps and invent one. Otherwise apply to the RMS for the issue of a VIN and stamp that one in.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
