My granddad's brother Paddy Troy is 'Western Australia's best-known communist'.

He died before I was born but Dad reckons he was a bit of a hard man - you'd have to be as a communist/unionist on the Freo docks. This also means my Dad is a die hard Freo Dockers fan. Unfortunate.

This is the pilot boat named after him

My wife has traced hers back to an uncle of William the Conqueror and thus back to Hrolfgangir (Rollo, first Duke of Normandy)from Faxe in Denmark. Rollo was one of those honest hard working Danish seafarers and merchants who carved himself a fiefdom in France literally with the sword and eventually subdued the French army to the point the King of France and the Pope offered him recognition in return for peace. Wife reckons her ancestry gives her a more legitimate claim to the British throne than Betty and her bunch of German usurpers.

I'm a bit blown away. This thread prompted me to do a Google search on my earliest known ancestor in Australia, Joseph Solomon. I came across this website which tracks Joseph & his brother Judah who was the dark horse of the family. It even includes a song written about his abandoned wife in England by Anna Burley of the Killjoys and Weddings Parties Anything. It's a bit peculiar when your family history is taken and given a life of its own by strangers.

Chances are you are related to 99% of the people on this forum as well. We don't have to go back too far in the big scheme of things (say 500 years) until we can trace numerous common ancestors.

Of course while we have to go back 500 years, Tasmanians have to go back to 5:00 yesterday.....

Cornwall, sure they were not smugglers, convicted and deported to Australia to carry on the family business??
Definitely farmers, but I wouldn't rule out a bit of smuggling on the side.

On the wife's side there is an Australian ALP politician, a very Tory English Lord and a French aristocrat who owned a castle, long-abandoned and in ruins. When a cousin went to investigate it the local authority started talking about the centuries of back taxes owing on it, so he zipped off quick smart before they pinned it on him!

i found a famous person with the same name as me from just before the English civil war in the early 1600s. but i have no idea if he is in any way related. i only know my family back to my grandparents,

my mum's maiden name was Wilson, and there was a us president Woodrow Wilson, 7 the translator of the diaglott bible was Benjamin Wilson, but i doubt they are related even though they have the same name.

i know a man with the surname Macintosh. his mother said they were related to the Apple founder. he looked it up but could not find any evidence of any relationship.,

My natural family is related to the Wooley family as in the late Charles Wooley. Also by six degrees of separation there is a connection to the Truman family. Very old Tasmanian family apparently. So was most likely assisted migration
