Ex-Army Unimog in Vic Auction - Stalling at idle. Simple reason/fix?

I'm thinking of bidding on an Ex Army Unimog in the Vic auction (finishes tomorrow).

I've only inspected it "by Proxy" (thanks Judo & DeeJay) and they both reported that it started OK, but it kept stalling unless you gave it blips on the throttle.

Is this anything serious, or just an adjustment issue? Maybe due to standing around? Engine just not warmed up?

Other information: Although speedo shows a lower figure, it seems to have done about 150,000Kms (from the service logs). It was last serviced in 2010, and has done about 4000Kms since that service.

Any thoughts appreciated I'd be seriously unhappy to fly in to Melbourne and discover it's not drivable back to Adelaide if it keeps stalling.

    Cheers
    David

Unless things have changed Unimogs ( Defence) have a hand throttle / fuel cut off, to the left of the steering wheel, if its not placed in the correct position it will stall out as described.

You have to crack open the hand throttle before starting.
If you don't it will stall when you release the accelerator pedal.
150000km is low for that engine however not serviced since 2010 is a concern.
I would at least change the engine oil and filter, check the rest of the fluids and make sure the brakes come up before driving it anywhere.

So, once things are warmed up, you then turn the hand throttle 'off'? Sounds a bit like my old 1984 Mercedes W123 300D. Without hand throttle when cold it rocks around at very slow idle. Looks like it is nothing to worry about then.

Re the 4 years since a service - well, if I pick it up from Melbourne it will have to do 700Kms before I can change the oil. If it's only done 4000Kms in 4 years then the oil won't be too dirty, but it might be a bit old.

The hand throttle is require to be set for the unimog to run. Im stretching the memory but there is a notch for idle. Leave the leaver in that position whilst engine is running. only move it further ( Raising idle ) for winching or going through water et. All the way up cuts fuel and stops the vehicle. The lever is left in this position fuel off, when stopped so if its hit behind in gear it wont start.

Boy - the price has jumped up a lot since the weekend! Last time I looked it was $8009 and now it is up over $12500. Still a reasonable buy price at the moment, but not if it heads up over $20K....

Thanks for all the advice about the hand throttle. I did a bit of searching and it seems to catch out lots of Unimog newbies.

handthrottle, Exhaust brake and throttle adjustments.

bet some idiot has tried at some point to keep it pinned with the exhaust brake on.

Excuse my ignorance, but what happens if you do that? Damage anything? Not sure what you mean by pinned...

Also Dave - any thoughts on the last oil change being 4 years ago, and driving it back to Adelaide?
