Something like this pic, with the centre raised, gives you a nice workshop area either side, but plenty of room for the AULRO hoist in the middle.

Here is one in OZ, price seems reasonable, the assumption is it is a mechano set for that price though.

OK I think you are all onto something, a barn for my shed and a hoist. If I can convince the misses to live in it while we build I could get it in first. Not sure how she would go about living with the hoist though..

The ones with the crossbar are clear floor while the others have the cables and hydraulics across the floor minimum thickness 4" with 10- 5 1/2" anchors provided Fairly sure there will be good working height but wont know till I get
    a chance to try

I build sheds for a living and most (if not all) shed companies offer American Barns to some degree. Do your homework as far as price and service is concerned as they are all fairly similar in design.

All the "Colourbond" colour names are now trademarked, so be aware if someone tells you "it's the same thing", coz it ain't

    Check out these hoists.

Would go for a hoist before a pit these days. There are also hoists that can be sat on a concrete pad & wheeled away when not in use. Think you will need about 3.6 m of roof height. + aerials of course.

Wish I had thought about a b.... hoist when I built my new shed.

I have a pit which I had the concreter put in when he did my shed floor. While it is good, and I do use it, if I had my time again I would build a higher shed and put in a hoist. I've had problems with water seeping in through the concrete when the ground gets saturated, even though the concreter said it would be waterproof the way he was doing it.

    Height

Just had a chance to get it up 2100 mm to bottom of TC and about 1900
to the bottom of the diffs to high for most jobs so even with a roof rack would be ideal

That looks great, I am only 1.7m tall so no issue at those heights for me.

I dug a kneel down pit that we lined and cemented in my father shed when I was a teenager. The floor was slightly sloped with a small area to scoop the last bit of water out if it ever leaked....

And that it did, it was always half full of water when it was needed... usually you ended up with a dead car parked over it for months. Several times I "fell" into the bloody thing.... Nothing like taking a step backwards when your carrying a gearbox to find nothing but air behind you (yeah did that a couple of times). Kneel down was a good depth though.

I reckon pits are the pits.... If I had the shed height I'd get a cheap 240volt hoist. I don't though, what I do have is a set of full length ramps.

If you keep an eye on ebay for "alignment ramps", you'll often find massive heavy duty things like these ramps for less than there scrap metal value. I cut away the big air rams used to tilt them and just lift the back with a trolley jack when I want them level. You can get cars with no ground clearance at all on them.

I believe a pit should be long enough so that one has an exit at either end in the event of a fire.

I recall reading that there have been many deaths in pits (but that could have been in the USA).
