About people who got stuck in the desert

I'm sure that I saw a thread about the tragic consequences of travelling unprepared through remote areas. If I did read it on this site I cannot find it by any of the usual search methods.

    How a desert claimed two ill-prepared travellers - National - www.theage.com.au

The article has a further reference to Eddie Furtak and there is some info at God Fixed My Tranny - Beliefnet.com .

This last article obviously contains a high degree of hocus-pocus and misleading info - if anyone knows the real facts about Eddie I would be interested to learn what they were (it is an area I have been fortunate to travel through).

I suspect that it comes down to problems with map scaling...

"but it looks so close on the map..."

I think that was should provide tourists with maps that are on scales they are used to..

"ok so this here is your map of the island of malta, neatly printed on the back of a readers digest. if you'll just follow me over to this paper covered foot ball field, thats your map to the island of australia....

Now Im not saying that things are big down under but its roughly 25,000 times the size of your island and basically has its own continental plate but we still call it an island.

Are you still sure about wanting to have a go at driving from adelaide to perth to catch the sunset tonight?"

Yes, all tragic events. Inexperience and incompetence claim quite a few.

A very sobering read - thanks for sharing.

Although the first link seems to contradict itself:

    • Do not leave vehicle under any circumstances
    • If they had walked nine kilometres west from their vehicle to the Georgia Bore they would have found fresh water and survived

Don't know many of the facts regarding Eddie Furtak, but I do recall that his vehicle was an ex-Army, ex Bushfire Brigade International 6x6 with fire-fighting water tanks on the back, one filled with water, the other fuel. He was reported missing by his family, but in fact he claimed to be having some "Time-out" in the wilderness to get in touch with his spirituality and also quit smoking. His vehicle was still functioning, and he had sufficient supplies of food and water. He just hadn't spoken to his mum!

Unsuitable/unreliable vehicle? Not too many show stoppers on a series Landie you can't bodge to get under way. No excuse for insufficient fuel though. I think we saw more foreigners than Aussies last year out there. Some of them seemed to think it was a rally too, drove theit vehicles very hard, broken shocks, springs, tyres, wheels. Ironically Georgia Bore was the nicest water on the entire CSR. sad to have died within 9km.

Thanks for that 303, I was guessing it was one of those, I wonder where it is now.

At least he would have had enough water !

......... goes to show - one should always keep their Mum up to date

The story doesn't seem to say what was wrong with their vehicle?

Certainly a warning to have plenty of water and fuel and a good map, as well as making sure someone knows where you're going.

It seems to me from the gist of the story is that they ran out of fuel, no mention of what broke so I'm assuming no fuel, Regards Frank.

Yeah, like you I couldn't find it stated that they ran out of fuel, it only said they didn't have enough fuel to reach ther next refuelling stop. Their note said "Vehicle broken down." Guess we'll have to wait for the coroner's report.
