Spotlights : Number, Size, Location.

Here's a thread that will promote some debate, I'm sure.

What are the merits and disadvanatges of various spotlight (driving light)arrangements :?:

    For example:

Is, say, 2 large lights better than 3 smaller ones ?

What combination of spots and spreads ?

Bar mounted versus Roof mounted ? (and which ones, where?)

    OK, I'll kick off.

I've got the standard rangy headlights, and the globes have been replaced with 90/130's. I've also got 2 Super Oscars, both running the original 100w globes. 1 spot, 1 spread, with the spread on the passenger side of the car. I've got the pencil beam aimed slightly to the right, so is useful for those morons that drive with their high beams on all the time. The driving lights are running through a relay, but I haven't got around to setting up a relay for the headlights yet.

The S.O.'s throw more light than the Oscars that were there before them, but not a large amount more. Comparing to my cousins Lightforces, the light is more directional. His Lightforces seem to throw the light all around the place in a much larger circle.

I'd like to get a couple more lights, but I've run out of room on the bullbar, and I don't think that mounting them above the bar is strictly legal. I have also heard that spotlights mounted on a roofrack 'flatten out' the terrain ahead, and make it a little harder to see dips due to the light coming from above. (Anyone with roofrack mounted lights, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!)

I was looking at some NiteStalkers. Anyone have any opinions on them?

Just to give some more thought for conversation:

    What about rear mounted spotlights?

there was a reason to mount lights ABOVE the line of vision,,,

dont you think World Rally paticipants like Suburu, Toyota, or other manufacturers would have worked that out,, even on bitumen,,

no hilights in the SPA 24 hour race either,,

and these cars are only 3 feet tall,,,,,

apart from that if you need a relay to run spotties,,

    its called "NEW ERA"

    a serious relay.

Ok three requirements all of them off road:

    1. Seeing how deep the holes in the track are? Should I slow down for this? Elevated lights?

    2. I'm descending a steep track and there is a steep climb coming up but my lights are pointing down.

    3. A hairpin switchback sharp turn..... can't see around corners because the lights are pointing straight ahead (the DS Citroen had high beam lights coupled to the steering so when you turned the wheels the light pointed in that direction didn't work so well on opposite lock).

More jobs for the co-driver with the hand held spot

I drive a Tdi and seeing 1000 m ahead is not a requirement.

I'm not entirely sure if these are "Nitestalkers" but they were free and work pretty well

Thanks Bushie. They look like NiteStalkers. That's one vote for 'em.

    <hijack>
I noticed you've got your recovery hooks on the flat of the bullbar too. Do you have a big plate underneath, or are they just bolted there?

That's why I'm getting one of those cheapo bright spotties from supacheap as mentioned in one of the Birthday threads. The missus isn't too keen on hanging her arm out the window though! (Too much windscreen glare if used inside)

How slow are we going One_?

slow enough to get out and have a look???

    too fast too slow down???

there is no correct way in the dark,,,

its all judgement,, how long/wide is that dark spot,,,,?

can I drive around it and miss all the others,,,?

normal headlights will give you the best on-ground shot of whats happening,,

just drive to the conditions,,,

    "we" are lucky,,

LR owners have pretty good sights of their corners,,,

Nissan owners just have this DASHBOARD facing them,,,,, no bonnet,, no nothing,,
