Any dog will try to protect it's owner/handler when an unknown person presents at the door irrespective of the hour the dog was only doing it's natural protective duty.

Read again the injuries inflicted. Sorry, but thats not "natural protective duty"

While I concede there are some dogs that are naturally aggressive, IME 99% of the time its the owner not the dog. The fact that they said "it was for protection" red flags to me that they must have mistreated it to increase its aggression towards strangers

    No always so

there are dogs that can be considered Alpha dogs...and im not talking in pack terms here..im talking in aggressive dog terms..

there are some dogs that will attack and have the confidence to do so and dont need to be trained to do it...these dogs are very dangerous to deal with because they will not back down or be calmed or be bargained with.

there are also dogs that will attack because they feel threatened if you come in to their space and when they feel threatened they will do what they got to do to get out of that situation they will often bite and leave though they wont maul or they will rush you to bluff there way out of it.

and there are dogs that are attacked trained....they don't have to be beaten or mistreated to be trained that way because all an attack is to an attack dog is a game! quite seriously...

I'm sorry to hear about your daughter Aus but seriously get on to the council the dog does need to be declared dangerous by the sounds of things.

and anyone reading this you should always enter any yard as if there could be a dog running out of anywhere.
Dogs can naturally be protective. If you know there is a dog on the premises try and ascertain where the dog is before entering because as I said you could easily get trapped by one running out of anywhere. If your not sure dont go in simple as that

That's not good Jim, I hope she has no lasting effect from it.
She will be covered by workers' compo, but this attack needs to be reported to the police and council. All the best mate.

Yes, but if you have a dog that is, as you say an Alpha dog, and has no issues attacking people then that suggests you got it specifically for that purpose.
No-one goes to a breeder or a pet shop and says "I'd like your most vicious dog please, something that my kids can play with"
If you've got an aggressive dog then to my way of thinking, regardless of if it's an alpha dog or you've mistreated it, there's a reason you've got it.
Sole blame rests on the owners shoulders imo

Jim, please pass on my best wishes to your daughter, I hope she has a speedy and trouble free recovery and finds a satisfactory outcome to the issue

For many years I had attack trained dogs, this was due to where I lived & the job I did.
Every 1 of these dogs could be called off. In other words if the dog thought some one was a threat but I did not feel threatened I could call the dog & settle it, just a couple of words was all it took. The dogs would just come & sit in front of me, if the person became loud or aggressive the dog would be up & ready to go.
Never, in many confrontations, did I ever have to let a dog attack, the threat of the dog (60kg Rottweilers) was always enough for little old 62kg me to get my way.
If your going to have a protection dog have 1 that has been professionally trained with you.
Now I don't have the same job or live under the same conditions I have a small red cattle dog that may get excited at a chook stealing it's food but I'm yet to see it.

G'Day mate, Yeah I understand where you are coming from, we are dog lovers ourselves and have always owned a dog. Until recently we had a cattle dog cross and she was a loverly natured animal. I honestly believe it's how a dog is socialised.

Talking to my daughter this morning, it appears the owner dragged the dog off, and the dog was still trying to get at my daughter, it was in a real frenzy. It was locked in the house and it STILL was carrying on and trying to get out. This dog is dangerous, and as another poster has mentioned, what if it was a child coming to the front door, they could have been killed.

Thanks everybody for kind thoughts and words of advice. Talking to my daughter this morning, she seemed depressed, which I guess is a natural reaction to an experience like this. Doctors are monitering her before deciding how to repair the wound, mainly to see if infection has taken hold.

I will be in Bundaberg from next Monday afternoon to Friday, staying at Moore Park Beach.

The company my daughter works for have changed their operational procedures on how to deal with people who own dogs.
