    A new Sidney Kidman?

I know some of you are like me and enjoy Australian history, so I thought I'd post this link to an interesting story about a new Sidney Kidman.

Tom Brinkworth: Reclusive pastoralist behind Australia's largest cattle drive - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

No, definitely Sir Sidney Kidman, the subject of the Ion Idress book, "Kings in grass castles".

Tom Brinkworth is an interesting character in his own right.
To meet him, you'd reckon he was down on his luck...always dressed in work clothes, has a big bushy beard and a daggy cloth sun hat.
He's also a very quiet and reserved person...not at all you typical businessman type or even pastoralist type.

There are stories of people in business who have not met him before, thinking he's a a bit of a hobo and refusing to take him seriously when he offers to do some expensive deal. But he DOES have plenty of financial clout.

Tom's pretty controversial in his home state of SA. He's had court battles over illegally digging drains, illegal clearing of land and over animal cruelty when he had lots of cattle die during a long dry spell. He has generally had the cases dismissed by using smart lawyers, or just pays the fine as part of the cost of doing business.

He also has thousands of wild deer running on his properties in the South East of SA and the neighbours are none too pleased about the damage they do to fences and to native vegetation.

Despite his many critics, Tom does seem to survive and in fact thrive financially. Not sure how he does it, but he always confounds the critics who reckon he'll soon go broke.

And he IS actually a nice bloke. Very modest as I said, quietly spoken and you've got to admire his ability to stick it up the bureaucrats and pollies on occasions!

Ion Idriess book on Kidman was called "The Cattle King"

"Kings in Grass Castles" was the story of the Durack family who migrated to the Kimberlies.

Thanks Andrew, I guess people get caught up in the desire to sieze the opportunity to reply and their partially remembered details don't get checked.

    Hopefully they will next time

Sir Sidney died in 1935, his biography was written by Jill Bowen [ Harper Collins ]called "The forgotten King", from memory. No need to apologise , Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
