    What Land Rover ?

    Hi All

I have a specific role for a Land Rover, I need a Recovery vehicle to replace the 80 series that is locked and loaded.

The wish list seems high but the I think justified, Five seater, diff locked, and front and rear winches - preferably hydraulic.

Basically it needs to be able to pull a fully overloaded lc 200 series out of Nolans Brook or deep sand.

    The 80 series is capable enough but not a land Rover to drive and I'd rather do the recovery of the mainly Toyota and Nissan drivers with a land rover :-}

I would welcome all suggestions but would prefer justification of the suggestions as to why the nominated vehicle would be better than others

    Thanks in advance

    Regards Mark

    Diesel or Petrol?

I'd be suggesting a D1 or a D2, or even a Td5 Defender if you budget will stretch.
Give us a bit more about what you want from it, it's other uses, etc and we'll tell you
The Phantom - Oslo Blue 2001 Td5 SE.
Half dead but will live again!

    Nina - Chawton White 2003 Td5 S
    Slowly being improved

    Hi Mark,

It has to be a County

Nice old box shaped Landrover that is easy to fix.

Don't get me wrong I really love the Puma I got off you and drive it everyday but the County is just simple compared to it and is strong enough to go anywhere and that's what I take out when I go doing the harder 4wd'ing.

Hope you are enjoying the Cape, I am hoping to be up there next year with the Defender.

Good to hear from you. No useful comment from me. Besides, didn't you leave your 120 at Adelaide River? Plenty of room in the tray.

I assume this is for you towing business? Army Unimog or LR 6x6?

    Hi All

Rod nice to hear from you too mate

    Richard - Nice to catch up mate and look forward to seeing you next year mate, I REALLY REALLY didn't want to sell the puma but I'm glad it went to someone who appreciates it :-}

I want the landy to be my personal transport as well as recovery vehicle, and I am thinking that a 110 is a minimum - would like to use it for pulling the boat and hunting etc and basically it needs to replace the 80 series.

The 80 series is front and rear arb locked, twin compessored, 1hz aftermarket turboed and intercooled with a 7hp 12000lb winch, bull bar and side rails ,swing away wheel carrier and jerry can holder with an arb roofrack , uhf pyrometer and boost gauges and a drawer system, a three inch dobinson lift, snorkel and tuned 14 lb of boost, and its reduced to 265 km2 mud terrains I think.

I basically need it to be a daily driver and also to carry out difficult recoveries and carry a family if need be

    My 120 can do most of the above but wont do the family thing to well and the mrs is a little bit down on the no aircon bit too :-}

I'm guessing either a 110 wagon or dualcab or a 130 would be the go but I am unsure about which would be better - or do I just use the 84 rangie if I can get it running well

    300Tdi Ute.

    Why
    - no electrics, so good for swimming through Nolans Brook.
    - no carpet, so no embarrassment over water in the cab.
    - ute, so no water damage to high cargo
    - fuel economy, so you can use 40% less fuel than your mates
    - look, so the Land Rover looks the part in all the photos
    - ute, so long range fuel tanks and water tanks under the body and you can sleep in the back

    - Winch with rope (for safety)
    - Front & Rear detroit lockers, no airlines, or compressor fuses to fail, maximun traction at all times. Cheaper and simpler than air lockers, money left for goodies.
    - LED Light bars - for night time recovery with minimal battery drain while winching.
    - Rear mounted winch - because it's so simple on a ute, and after all it's a recovery vehicle.
    - Fridge - to keep the payment recieved for recovery
    - Two air compressors (with air tanks) - so you can inflate their tyres and yours with minimal down time, plus built in redundancy.
    - UHF radio, so you can communicate with the broken down Toyotas / Nissans.
    - HF radio, so you can order parts for the recovered cars.

Armour - so you can drive in with abandon.
-H/D steering rods (the original is maleable)
    -H/D drive flanges / axles
    -Steering Guard
    -Diff guards
    -Wingtop chequerplate
    -Insect screen over radiator
    -Rock sliders

    Cool stuff
    - shooting hatch over the passenger seat - remove the seat swab and there's grip plates on the battery box lid so you can stand on it and not slip. Open the hatch and shoot, whether it be video or arms.

    Hi Mark,

Do your shopping at the army auctions at Grays Online and get either a 4 or 6wd Perentie and a Unimog with a Hiab. Not sure if they have sales at Townsville?

Choose the right vehicle and they come equipped with a decent winch. The down low torque of the Isuzu will be ideal for you, you won't need the winch half the time. At the end of the day, you won't be doing that much Hi-way driving, so the 4 speed box will be OK. You will be able to use these pretty much out of the box.

I stand to be corrected but an pretty sure these have a gal chassis. Most other vehicles operating in your area will rust out in a few years.

We used to know of the people who ran Silver Plains Station on the Cape and they bought new Hiluxes every second year, they were rusted out in 12 months.

Marko, I would think a light truck, IE Isuzu NPR 4x4 would be a better prospect??? Maybe too heavy but as a dual cab the late ones are almost carlike to drive, and very good on fuel. One of my customers sold his P38a and bought one as he had a 4.2T boat to tow, he paid $3k LESS on the road than a LC200!!!

    JC
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

As mentioned above, a Perentie sounds ideal and yes I can confirm they have a galvanised chassis (having now crawled under and over many!).

Would love to see some poor blokes face when you say to them "Oh did your poor new Prado get stuck? Here let me get you out with my 25 year old Landy"

    Cheers
    Matt
