The case was taken on, pro bono. Only the State Government incurred costs.

Only if Norrie commited a crime and was sentenced to gaol. AFAIK Norrie has not been charged or convicted of anything.

Norrie, would be something you could use!

I guess that's Norrie's point. Norrie wanted the equivalent of "X" on Norrie's birth extract, the NSW Registrar was not permitted to accommodate that description and therefore needed direction from the High Court. Isn't that what the High Court is there for?

I am thinking I might identify as gender neutral as well. At least the toilets should be clean. Would there be a urinal. I would be offended if I had to sit down. What a waste of taxpayers money!!!

I think a lot of this comment is well intentioned but actually misses the point... the reality is that to be born with a "psyche" which truly reflects one's genital form and all that it implies is to be born "lucky". The mystery of how many variables must align to produce a specimen "perfect" in mind and body, on the journey from conception to birth is daunting.

Transgender people are in "nobody's" land. As a rule, societies through the ages have marginalised/ostracised or worse, those who were deemed different by the standards of the day. Homosexuals, transgendered persons, the intellectually and /or physically disabled have been at one time or another, and are currently, discriminated against by different societies. It's well recorded that the Nazis disposed of all sorts of people who didn't fit the stereotype Aryan ...

This is not about do-gooders. I believe it's a reflection on how we have grown up and are maturing as a society that we can see beyond the difference and recognise such people as genuine human beings entitled to the same rights as everyone else. Could you imagine this being accepted even 20 years ago? A 5-0 High Court score in favour is a good start!

''sex'' is not binary - it is not only ''male'' or ''female''
one quick stop down at the DNA checking and chromosome mapping facility reveals that sorry if you have a Y chromosome your a male, if you have X's your a female....

when it can prove that it has something other than an X or a Y in its DNA where there should be an X or a Y... its a guy or a girl.

    simple really....

want to sort the mess out in totality, DNA samplers on toilet doors, Ys get let into the mens and X's get into the girls.

Not as simple as that... some men are born with two X chromosomes, one of which they inherited from their mother. They look and act like men but are genetically female. It's relatively rare statistically, but so is winning lotto...it happens! ... there should be room for respect for everybody.

    Not quite that simple

This does reflect a real problem for some people. While Norrie looks like a bit of a cliche which seems to annoy some, there are people whose junk is a bit of both, or who have an unusual mix of chromosomes. Nothing political, nothing based on choice necessarily, except where they need to choose one or the other to fit in. Just their biological reality. Not recognising this on a passport, for example, can create some really genuine problems, particularly when travelling to countries overseas with less tolerant attitudes to this sort of thing.

It's mostly not about choosing to be "complicated", more about biology thrusting complexity upon people. Difficult thing to live with, I'd imagine, especially if government forces you into boxes into which you don't fit.

I wonder how much all of this will cost! Legal fees, legal aid, changes to legislation, reprinting forms. I also wonder what Norrie does for a crust. I haven't seen any characters like that around the office lately.
