    ABS on the beach

    Hi Guys
I was reading an article on the new flander. They said it really strugled on the beach due to its traction control applying the brakes.
I was wondering how you guys with the newer landies/discos/rangies get on in loose sand.
It sounds like a switch that disconects the ABS when the centredifflock was applied could be handy.
Surely any amount of offroad action is really going to cause a lot of pad/rotor wear in these vehicles?

I think its all a big Furphy to be honest. I've done a fair whack of sand driving and do have an ABS/ETC override switch. To be honest I've never had to use it. If you drop your tyre pressures to something suitable, then the ETC hardly triggers, and if it does then I think you are still better off than a non-ETC truck anyway. On stockton I run 13psi, Fraser/Simpson 20psi and no dramas. 4WD monthly did a test and the ETC Defender stopped in the same spot as the rear locked trucks from what I recall.

Correct tyre pressures are fundamental in any off road situation.

I have heard or read that ETC can be a problem as it requires wheel spin and the liberal use of the "right welly". This in sand can result in digging holes.

I have never had a problem with my ABS on sand, only ever had trouble in the gravel down south. But that can be like driving on marbles too.
