That would be a shame IMO the collins are the best diesel subs in the world and lessons learnt in building them would carry over to a vastly improved design. It wasn't that long ago Australian warship monthly reported Taiwan was interested in purchasing diesel subs from the USA but as the USA has not made diesel subs since the late 50s they directed the Taiwanese towards Australia. But pressure from China towards Australia in terms of trade agreements put a end to that project. Also Collins class subs perform very well at the RIMPAC exercises against nuclear subs and carrier battle groups. Many times the USA nuclear subs seek to train with the Collins class because of their capability.

Japan has a long history of building diesel-electric submarines. Amongst their WWII designs were the largest submarines in the World that could even carry and launch seaplanes from a hangar on the submarine, remember the attack on Sydney Harbour? They also design and build diesel-electric submarines designed for deployment in the Pacific Ocean and not just in territorial waters off the coast of Europe.

So along with their tradition of excellent engineering I believe we would be well advised to consider their designs. A lot of the construction will be done in Australia and remember in WWI Japan was allied to the British Empire and Australia.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

I agree the Japanese make some awesome ships and subs.Their destroyers are a very trick piece of kit and world class. The subs are very good to. I would hate for Australia to not cash in on what we learnt from the collins project but if the Japanese subs are more suited to Australia's needs and will built here under licence which will lead to Aussie jobs then maybe it's something worth looking at.

A partnership, building them here, but taking advantage of Japanese technological advances, perhaps. Bob

Hey disco man, when it comes to defence I think this is one area where Aussie jobs shouldn't be a consideration until every other factor has been considered. Boiled down, when someone's shooting at you you need to be 100% sure what you're pointing back is the best available. Who cares where it's made.
