Still have a pair of battered CIBIE Super Oscars in The Shed, waiting for the Right Moment to go on another car (mine...)

#1 Son tried to "borrow" them, but seeing as the cupped washer is missing we could'nt mount them. - He settled for an old small Oscar with the washer... - we replaced the 100W globe with 35W HID, and it gives a fantastic mix of spread and penetration. - Despite the reflector being dull, a bit like like silver paint !

Just goes to prove that Good Design is will always endure, even if the silvering won't.

Best headlight replacements I've had was a full set of 5 3/4" CIBIE inserts. Adding cheap spotties made stuff-all improvement. Still got them in the Museum, a.k.a. The Shed.

PS, No, Son did'nt twig that the same washer could be used with the Supers...and I did'nt, ah, enlighten him...

Pic shows the differance between stuffed and new reflectors, worse in real life, but the CIBIE is still the better light, 35W cheap HID Vs Narva 100W halogen.

Check out my avatar photo...two big Cibie Super Oscars looking at you! I love them. Had them on my D1 for years and stuck them on the D2 some years ago. My brother had a set of Oscars (not Super, just Oscars, the small ones) in the low beam holes of a Mark 10 Jag...went very well.

I reckon they are the business. I know there are LED/HID tuff this and that (lightforce etc which are excellent) but I do like the old Cibies.

    Cheers

I feel the same about my IPF extreme sport 900s, both in spread pattern. Brilliant light. 65w globe so they hardly ever blow. Had the same pair on the last couple of vehicles and have never changed a globe. Biggest regret of selling my 96 disco was leaving the IPF's on it. Haven't felt the need to go to either LEDs or HIDs. If it ain't broke...

That and I have a serious hate for LED light bars. I don't know why I hate them, I just do. They just scream "I'm a ******!" to me.

AS originally mentioned the Super Oscars i bought have been fitted with 75 w HID and the supplier, who also supplies Lightforce, Hella, etc reckons the Cibie lens and light pattern is still No 1 after 30 years.

I would be interested to know what is the light of choice for the serious rally crowd, or is it driven by Sponsor $$
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
