Is that a result of drugging the dogs or other factors such as sickness or falls. Whats the main cause of death?
Colorado, USA.
I do not think that ever will happens here.
This new ban in Colorado is being considered a big victory. That being said, greyhounds are still forced to race, legally, in other states. As of the time of this article, there are still eleven states with no bans of any kind in place, and seven of them have some form of operational dog racing tracks running.
There is a recent law in Florida that requires the reporting of any greyhound deaths. Thanks to this law, we now know that over the last few months in 2013, 74 greyhound deaths have occurred at 10 Florida tracks. If you do the math, you get roughly one death every three days. Just in the beginning of 2014, there have already been 18 deaths at these Florida race tracks.

The horse racing industry is no better Arthur.
My daughter luckily fostered a young standard breed (trotter) who would have been put down because he was a suspect bleeder and had no economic future.
I worked greyhound tracks for a few years. Saw a few deaths - from falls and also from heat stress. More with fractured limbs that would likely have been euthanised the following day. Dogs than ran contrary to expectations were often drug tested, so there was some attempt to control this element in the sport.
I think concern about deaths on the track, however, is missing the point to an extent. Deaths on the track are often apparent to the public, but far more greyhounds are quietly killed simply because they are slow, injured, or retired from racing. Certainly some owners provided for their dogs once they retire, and various greyhound adoption agencies do a great job.
For anyone who hasn't had much to do with greyhounds they have the nicest temperaments. Never had one try and bite me - which is more than I can say for many breeds. Obviously they enjoy their exercise, but also just as happy on the lounge. Part of the work adoption agencies do is teach retired greyhounds to adjust from life in racing kennels to life in a regular home. Maybe consider adopting a greyhound if you are looking for a new family pet.
Rick, I have driven many times trough the New England hwy and I never tired to contemplate a property with the name The Emirates and wondering how many millions are inverted there.
It is impressive.!!
Are the owners live there or they live in "Oil Wonderland" far away from there?
I lived at one end of that stud for seven years, I now live in the little town at the other end.
The owners don't live here, they only visit, and in the scheme of things that place only probably ranks fourth or so in terms of impressiveness !![]()
They are both bad thoroughbred and standardbred..
however as awful as it is to say at least they have a use when they are discarded, as in pet food..
the dogs that lose their lives through racing have no further use, they are literally waste thats what is sad they die and they die for nothing.
