			cheap n cheerful runabout

					Hi all,
Now that I have my Rangie rolling again,I will be retireing my D1 to greener pastures.
To be on the safe side,I want to buy a cheap n cheerful little runabout that will not cost the earth in either rego fees or maintenance, but will start up when required and get me to the shops/work/friends etc,etc for when Rangie not going(hopefully never
)
Think the budget around $2-3 thou.
All suggestions welcome.
cheers

Plenty around for that coin, have a look at the earlier Camry's and Cressida's, I have a 93 Camry, has cruise, fast glass, climate control auto, auto lights etc... great on fuel, does everything right without a fuss and easy to service and repair.... only owes me about 1500.
I have had a look at similar year model Cressida's, you get a lot of features for little coin, yes they are getting a bit long in the tooth but then so are most RRC and D1 Landies too but that doesn't stop us does it.

Any small jap 4 would fit the bill. I've had good experiences with corollas and currently a pulsar. Post 2000 hyundai's are also another thought.
Cheers

 Sarcastic....
Gotta be cheap to buy, run, maintain , and Reliable....
I picked up a Mazda 121 'Shades' for $2k. Dunno the year, 1.5litre / 5 speed manual and goes like a rocket. (bit harsh riding as it's got the '60' profile tyres) Sips fuel at the rate of 35mpg = 12.5 km/litres or 8 litres per 100km. - Would do better if I drove it gently...
My daily driver which means I can afford to use the Classic occasionally....
Have had 2 previous Mazdas, the pick of the Japs, IMHO for overall quality.

For a few more pennies you might be able to step into a Suzuki Jimny! Ours was fantastic, used around 6.5L/100km and had enough space (compared to other small cars) to carry what we needed!

The first of the Mazda 3 straight after the Astina was the better of the bunch.
The later ones weren't quite as good. (had a mate that worked at Mazda at the time)
The SP23 was a good little rocket too.
