Will be looking shortly, just getting my head around it atm. Finish date 26 June. At least is a reasonable redundancy, so do have some breathing space. Just a shame as I did love my job.
Do not want to have to unsettle my family again as have moved them 3 times in 6 years and now just 2 years into a mortgage, so maybe FIFO or OS work may come into play.

That's bad news but it sounds like at least you got a fair bit of warning. Is the mining industry really slowing down that much at last? I always thought the big boom was a bit shaky since it had to end sometime, and people were getting too comfy with it. (Though I'm not saying you were.)
WA has always been hard to find work in as we don't have a very big or creative economy. Have you thought about doing something different to get away from the whole boom-and-bust industry? I know it's hard, though.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
I've just seen this pop up on linkedin. Not sure if it fits your skill set?
SEEK - FIFO HSE Advisor (3/1) Job in Port Hedland, Karratha & Pilbara
Lots of safety work outside the mining industry. We binned the mines last year - too volatile and dependant on ore prices. Not to mention the "lip service" approach to safety - as a HSE guy you're just shouting at clouds most of the time.
Look around at construction and other industries - you might find something more stable that pays just as well. We certainly have had no trouble finding good quality safety related work outside the mines.
Good luck with it - never fun to be looking for work.

That's a bugga Craig. I don't know that any job is safe. Not a very happy place at the moment.
Hope you find something soon.

One thing that is really giving me theat the moment is the 457 visa scam. Its supposed to be a solution to fill positions where skills are lacking locally but I know first hand this is not always the case. In my industry (telecoms) I have seen far to many highly experienced Engineers let go recently and some have been with the company for 20+ years and really know their stuff. Their jobs are 'made redundant' but soon become new positions filled by a 457 person on half the wages.
Rort fears as 457 visa loophole reopened
126,000 457 visas granted in 2012/13, how can this be allowed to continue with so many Aussies being layed off
The other thing is how the hell are we supposed to work till we are 70 if the government is allowing so many foreign workers to come in and take all the jobs!
Look out for a job with aged care as the need for workers in that area is becoming greater, personally I have been keeping a eye open for the job as a driver for the day excursion bus.
Fingers crossed!

Budget should result in a big lft in road construction so are there opportunities there?
