Bob I don't think we will ever understand the mindset of these people , There religion is indoctrinated into them from an early age . Christianity was like this in many county's , through the middle ages . Thank goodness we have moved on . Lets hope pressure from the other country's can bring about her release , because in our eyes this is an awful injustice !!..Jim..

Not just the middle ages - in many European countries having the wrong religious views would lead to a very sticky (or smoky!) end well into the seventeenth century, and in a few cases into the nineteenth century.

Several of the early colonies in what is now the USA were founded by groups that feared for their lives because of their religious views - and proceeded to persecute any of their own people who deviated from the "proper" views.

Freedom of religion is, in practice, a relatively new concept in the Western world, becoming fairly generally accepted only probably in the last fifty years. But if you look at history, restriction on religion really has only started with the rise of Christianity, copied by Islam. With some exceptions, earlier religions had always assumed freedom of belief.

Is there a way of making a thread invisible to JohnF?

Staying on the original subject, I totally agree that the freedom that we take for granted here in this country is not necessarily enjoyed all around the world.

Here, I'm quite sure you could wander up and down the street and pop in and out of the local mosque, synagogue, hindu temple and half a dozen varieties of church with probably little more than a friendly chat and a smile.

In other places it seems that you end up being fitted with a new collar. I'm very glad that the Western world is attempting to bring pressure to bear.
