a man in need of acorns

    Hi,
Does anyone out there have an English Oak tree on their property - or near by?

I'd like some acorns to plant as I would like to try growing some Oak trees.

I'm happy to pay for postage/collect myself if your near Canberra.

When I lived near Yass, I collected large numbers of acorns from various places in Canberra including (I think) the War Memorial.

    There are more here.

Ours grew very well on our property out towards Bowning. Most of them were planted by walking around the paddock with a big wrecking bar, driving it into the ground to make a hole, dropping in the acorn and then stomping on it.

I have an oak. If you can't find closer I can post some acorns up. I'll have to check if it is an English or American oak I suspect English.

Corner of Scrivener Street and Bangalow St O-Connor - opposite to the Church - they are lying on the nature strip - you might have some competition though.

This was taken on Thurs afternoon - these are just two of the about 100 cockies having afternoon tea.

However I do not know what they are off.

    Great responses.

Looks like it is a trip to the war manorial and York park tomorrow, I'll take the kids and tell them that we are going to look for treasure.

I'll let you know how I get on.

But there are too many deciduous trees in Canberra not that gum trees in suburbia are any better.

    Thanks for all the help.

After a morning of 'treasure hunting' - where the youngest decided stones were more valuable than acorns. We now have 160 acorns in forestry tubes.

We were a bit late in the season to harvest as all the acorns had already fallen to the ground - time will tell how successful the venture has been..

That sounds about right. They have a mind of their own at a pretty early age.

We just picked ours up from the ground.

It was over 20 years ago so I can't remember all the details, but I think we had pretty good success with some in pots. I know the strike rate from those planted directly in the ground was very good.

I hope you know how big oak trees grow and that you have a big block.

We had 52 acres to accommodate ours.
