An old Alfa GP car from the pre-post war era.
    Straight eight, supercharged, 1.5 litres.
    It screamed.

Heard it at the Oz GP in ('91 or '92?) when it was circulating with the W155 Merc that Fangio was piloting (and crashed ! )
The fuel that Merc used was the best smelling toxic substance I've inhaled

Jean Gooses XJS Jag at Bathurst ('83 or '84) sounded fantastic too. Twin pipes so it sounded like a stereo straight six calico rip until it hit about 7000RPM where it then changed to a classic V12 scream
The TWR cars that came in following years just plain hurt as well as sounding blaah with their quad exhausts.

My 300tdi can be quite nice at times.

I have pretty agrarian ideals when it comes to what is pleasing

Caving to the pressures of the hive mind, a rover V8 with the right buttons pushed can sound the ducks guts.

Sorry, but you need to get out more. 4 cylinder diesels sound like

And that's coming from someone that used to run a 300Tdi with an uncorked 3" pipe !
It was awful in the extreme, and even now that it's been silenced somewhat with a clever muffler and reasonable resonator, it still sounds ordinary. Just the nature of the beast.

Clearly your exhaust bearing was on the way out

But absolutely - the drone on the highway is pretty amazing, but that's why I love it! It's the opposite end of elegant.
The same mates of mine that love how their 2.8 patrols note & whistle are the same ones that fall into despair when their foot wells get moist.

Unrefined beauty is where its at for me with the Defender at least. It would be completely out of place on a BMW but when your best view of the world is mud and you can't see the pedals for water it fits perfectly.

These were not too bad either, start at the 1 min 16 sec mark.

Well, if we can count boats, try the MTU series 538, fitted to the Fremantle patrol boats. 3,200 SHP, 2,400KW. I've never seen a better engine. Typical German efficiency, every major maintenance routine had it's own boxed tool kit. Each spanner shaped to fit. And it sounded as it looked, awesome!. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
