If I could say only one thing...............
Do NOT fool yourself that social media of all types is not a trolling ground for undesirables of all types. We get regular info sessions at work and it's bloody scary. Scammers and thieves to name a few.
As an example, just recently the IT intelo at work gave a lecture on social media. He picked just one, unnamed person from work and gave us a complete rundown of recent activities. Holidays, places he visited and names (first names only) of people he knew and spoke to. Plus information on his private life. It was frightening. There are far more people out there that know more about IT than me. They scare me!

    But each to there own..

    Cheers

You can know where I live because I'm not there much & if you steal the wife & kids.................... I would report it eventually.

As you say, each to their own (or more correctly, each to his own).

However life is about being realistic about the balance between risks and benfits.

I am aware of just how much information can be gathered by anyone who takes the trouble to trawl through social media and other sites. The It head teacher of a nearby school described to me how he did similar a exercise with his senior students to that done by your IT bloke. Without using any of the information he had access to by virtue of his management of the school's computer network, he astounded them by demonstrating just how much he could find out about them.

However, the question is not whether people can find information such as where you park your pride and joy. The question is whether that is the only way they could find that information or even the easiest way. I think it would be more likely that car thieves could spot a car either parked at a shopping centre or just driving along the road and follow it home to find where it was garaged.

In any case, how many cars are stolen from home compared with how many are stolen from work or from parking lots?

Surely your point about how much information people can find by searching the internet just shows how futile it is to try to hide what you believe is valuable information for a car thief. If car thieves can find so much information so easily then keeping the name of your suburb off this forum is hardly likely to save you.

Of course car thieves might do what you worry about, but I think there are easier ways for them to get the information they need.

I thnk a more effective way of stoppping a car thief from getting information that would help them steal your car would be to ensure that you never parked it in the street or in a parking lot or at a shopping centre and that you never drove it on the streets in case someone saw it and followed you home.

Yes you raise some valid points, and really it's hard to disagree. But back to the question asked in the OP. I don't think it really matters from what location I live. I only get onto two forums and I use my real name. I don't like to hide behind a forum name other than what's used above. And I hate FB.
Why does it matter where I live?

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
It doesn't really "matter where you live", but as Alan(OP) suggested, you may be able to help one of us in need. You may end up making a new friend who lives just around the corner from you. As depicted through other posts on here, quite often,, well ok,, nearly always, high end vehicle owners don't wave to Defender/Series drivers, you could have two people on here almost next door to each other who due to not waving, don't realize they have much in common. "Hello", friendship sparked, happy days

There are many of us here whom have friends all over Aust due to this site. I'm sure if we were all closer, we'd be able to interact in person. Doesn't mean anyone wants to live in anyone's pocket, but it's certainly nice to have a coffee or beer and chew the fat, so to speak.

Many times, posts have been started looking for help of some description, and sometimes, it may only require a quick phone call, sometimes a tool is needed. All good and valid points, and like others, I'm sure if some thief was to troll our site to steel something, there's little any of us could do about it.
And I'm not sure, but it seems from my experience, everybody reckons Landies are no good anyway, so why would they bother tracking to steel one

I'd be far more worried about online banking details etc.

    When I read this:

I got all excited. I thought I was all set for a cup of tea (or a glass of amber fluid) next time I was passing through Narra Warran.

    Then I read this:

Well we don't need to put our EXACT location as Allan (Wardy1) has been to visit us Funny things forums, some like to keep all private and others like to YELL form the rooftops. We have made many friends all over Aus because of this forum. All Wardy1 is asking, put a general area, suburb location instead of "Melbourne" .
