Damn, never got a rifle when you need one. This little bastard crossed the Anne Beadell Highway upwind from us in 2013 (about 50 Km wast of Emu)and all I had to shoot it with was the Nikon.



What is an absolute tragedy is that this is an extremely arid area with water and hence fauna very, very limited. This one animal whose only water supply would be gained from the small animals it devoured or moisture licked from leaves would totally devastate the area (fauna wise) in which it roamed. For this animal to survive during the summer months is nothing short of amazing and testament to it's 'survivability'. This cat is fully grown and would measure in at a good 5' or 1.5 metres nose to tip of tail.

The only good cat is a dead cat.

im not the best person to explain it, but cats are happy when they hunt. keeping them inside is cruel. like prison.

i do understand that doesnt help the native bird population.
banning cats would be a better idea but politically unacceptable.

I've seen a cat successfully hunt and kill a starling with three bells on its collar. Two were held under its chin and one in its mouth so they didn't ring whilst on the hunt. Bloody amazing.

In my opinion all cats should be kept inside and not allowed out at all. Put in a large cat run if you think its too much of a prison. Or keep your cat stimulated with toys etc to keep it happy.

Cats will eventually wipe out all small native mammals and birds if not brought under control. Its funny - control foxes and feral cat populations explode.

I have had cat's and dogs for most of my life. Yes some cats hunt and kill but not all. My current cat Nelson was raised on a mine in WA. It had a hard life half the people would kick it and some would pat it. Food was spasmodic and it would kill rabbits to survive. Only rabbits for some reason. Any way the mine closed and the cat was left behind. A friend of mine who worked at the mine organized to rescue him. It took 3 days to trap him. He had told me about it and intended to adopt him. But needed someone to look after him for a couple of days. So I get a phone call can you pick the cat up at Perth airport he is on flight X from leonora. So I pick him up and take him home with no idea what to expect remember he has been fending for himself for about 2 years. Anyway got him home and let him out of cat transport cage. He ginderly walked around the unit and disappeared under the bed. Where he stayed there apart from coming out for food and toilet duties. It was about 3 months before he would feel comfortable around the unit. Anyway I have had him for 10 years now I flew him from perth to Melbourne when I came back. In this time he has never hunted or attempts to. Birds can walk past him he just lies there. If we want to generalise about species the largest group in the cause of extinction of other species in us humans. Let's cull them the planet was getting along fine before we evolved to the intellectual giants that we think we are.

I really hate the attitude "only good cat is a dead one" just find it upsetting. I know people are entitled to their own opinions though. I also know cats cop a lot of blame for stuff. They are guilty for stuff too. But a lot are too lazy. Mine couldn't catch a bird even if they tried lol. But i firmly believe cats should not be allowed to wander. They should be indoor only (mine are) and should be law that only allowed out in cat proof yards/run/leads. As too many people have them whom are lazy and irresponsible owners who should not have pets. Feral cats are a problem. So are foxes. Rabbits are too as they push native animals out of areas. There are so many people who just hate cats and threaten people's pets and its just wrong they should threaten the owners for not looking after their cat. I am sitting here having a chrisis over a baby deer on tv that a stupid monkey decided to eat alive and i cant get its painful cries out of my mind. So i am an avid animal lover lol.

I agree with you that the owners are the problem, not only of cats but dogs as well.
We have to agree that cats are a formidable hunting animal, it is in their genes and they should kept under control.
IMO feral cats and pack of wild dogs should be eliminated.

the wild cat is copping a lot of flak , and so it should.

we also have millions of wild pigs...

millions of wild horses...

millions of wild camels....

millions of wild goats....

don't know how many wild deer.....

there are many other animals that should not be roaming this country.

what do we do?

I used to shoot.....I was an army small arms coach and range safety officer......but they (the government) took away my own rifles....and my guns.

If we were all allowed to make a contribution to controlling these animals we might get somewhere.

Its considered cruel to trap rabbits now.....I think rabbit traps may be illegal.

I used to shoot thousands of rabbits, hundreds of foxes , hundreds of pigs , any feral cat I saw.

I used to feed many families with goats and rabbits and the odd roo, but I'm not allowed to now.

I got my knives out the other day and cleaned and oiled them and dressed the sheaths and felt a real pang of regret that I was never able to pass onto my sons what I had learned about hunting.

There are thousands of Australians , just like me , who had to stop hunting just because of stupid laws.

It's too late now....these feral numbers far outweigh our population and we will never reel it back.

We could , with the help of our armed forces , start to eradicate some of these menaces but which political party would make that call?
