Iran is helping Assad to survive in Syria, is helping the Kurds against IS and has close ties with the Iraqi Government, but Iran refused to join the meeting in Paris to cement the alliance against IS - why? Was it just because they won't co-operate with the Americans? Maybe Iran thinks it can extend its influence over both Syria and Iraq if it plays its hand cleverly and builds its influence without being compromised by becoming too close to the West.
Why did IS deliberately infuriate the west by the beheadings? Does it actually want to be attacked by the West? Does IS believe being attacked by the West will actually attract more people to support IS? They're not stupid.
I can't help fearing we're once again naively being sucked blind into an escalating quagmire we don't understand, as the war we began in 2003 ramps up again, probably with similarly dire results for all concerned.
Exactly the sort of mindless response who ever planned this wants. What is going on over there , I believe, is designed to have the foolish " infidels" rush in A LA Bush, Obama is taking the right approach, Building support, giving the Kurds & the Iraq Army time to get some type of organisation to be able to push ISIS back to Syria. Then it's Russia's problem, Russia being the backer of Assad. And Iran is side lined, for now. Any way, I'm not an expert like you. When are you signing up, by the way? Bob

Russia: We warned the Americans about Islamic State
Russian officials fear regional war may turn into a world war.

"A joke making the rounds among Russian officials and hacks who take a keen interest in what is going on in the Middle East these days goes something like this: How will the Yanks deal with the Islamic State group? They will create "Islamic State 2", a bigger and better armed group, and let it deal with the original Islamic State group. And what happens when "Islamic State 2" turns against them as it happened with the original Islamic State? They will create "Islamic State 3", and so on."
That does make some kind of sense, but I can't help feeling it is payback for NATO & Obama supporting Ukraine. The part about arming the rebels in Syria, sounds pretty spot on. When ISIS took Mosul, they took control of massive amounts of US supplied equipment stored there. The Iraq Army just ran away & left it. As I said, I'm no expert, but this can of worms, could turn in to a can of snakes. Bob

Pickles, I agree with you, they are a cancer in the world and confining them in a territory and not eradicating them it is impossible.
I cannot see how we can negotiate with these individuals, they are so far opposed to our values that will be impossible arrive to a peaceful resolution.
Iran's view on it, Bob
