FWIW I decided to subscribe a while ago because I believed it was the right thing to do when it dawned on me that it costs money to run these things. My career before I retired was in IT and I realised it costs money to run a site and keep it up to current acceptable standards of performance.
I have enjoyed the repartee of the members ( well, at least most of them) and found the AULRO an invaluable source of advice and information before and after I bought my first Land Rover late last year.
Dave, thanks for doing what you do and I hope your health improves. I know what a problem ill health can be as my wife is quite ill herself and I now have to care for her. Don't let any negative comments worry you, you're doing the right thing by the forum in my opinion.
All the best.
Martin
Hi Eevo, as best as I can explain it - The AULRO servers are housed in a data centre so there are ongoing monthly fees to store and maintain them there. Inc used to have them at his home and business, but they outgrew these arrangements and the data centre is also a more secure location long term. The hope is that with a big enough user base that all those fees are covered so Inc doesn't have to keep paying for all this himself - it costs him directly out of his back pocket at the moment, which isn't viable long term. Your subscription, and all others goes straight to reducing the amount Inc has to pay himself each month.
There is also the cost of upgrades to software and hardware along the way, and more data storage as the amount of information grows in here.
Advertising revenue has been steadily dropping due to the popularity of ad blockers, so the gap is widening. These measures are an attempt to stem that. There was a lot of discussion about what was the best way to do this, and it was an incredibly hard decision for Inc to make about doing this.
Hope that explains it?
Gav.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.
A very quick calculation suggests that if you became a subscriber rather than a supporter, that would be $16.50 more beneficial to Dave.
OTOH if you became a silver subscriber, the increase in benefit would rise to $44 or as a gold subscriber that would increase the benefit by $77 over the benefit to Dave of your becoming a supporter.

I have always supported this forum since I started looking at it(lurker) in early 2003, I later joined because there was an opportunity to have a close look at Land Rovers(had an Explorer at the time) and gwas offered a drive and or ride in one offroad at Aces BBQ, because of Aces BBQ and this forum, we purchased a Discovery 2 in January 2005, I love this forum, it is by far the best forum on the net.
Thank you Eevo for your support and all the others that have decided to subscribe

I've been linking to this forum via google for years. Only recently became a 'member' for a closer look.
I was thinking about subscribing, but probably won't. I will probably delete my membership anyway. All and sundry can now tell me that "I won't be missed",etc...
Forums are all the same: The written word. Sarcasm, rudeness, smart*****.
Who polices this stuff? I mean, really? In the end you get the view that it's just some private club for 'some bloke and his mates'. (I'm not referring to the moderator here - I'm talking about members).
Such is the nature of forums. I guess I am a luddite and I am just not 'into it'.
As far as paying is concerned: Eventually it has to happen. Every business gets bigger. Bandwidth, computers and time all cost money. But everyone here should note: This is a business. It's not a club for a bunch of mates. It has got too big and needs to move on. Whether it succeeds in its direction or not is unknown. But in its current state, I will probably not pay to join it.
