Take 10 big paces... turn at right angles... take 8 big paces... You've just marked out the length and width of a Nice Big Shed.![]()
My shed is 7.5m x 18m and 4m walls with 4.4m pitched centre height. I have 4 levels of shelving 600mm deep all around the walls but the best thing I have is a travelling gantry that spans the width and runs almost the length of the shed. The supports for the shelving are 100 x 50 x3 RHS and spaced 3m apart. The rails situated on top of the supports are railway line and the gantry is a length of railway line upside down and trussed for support. A block and tackle trolley runs on the track giving me the ability to pick up something weighing in excess of a ton and walk it anywhere in the shed. Made it all myself pretty much from scrap. (It helped they were demolishing the railway line near home at the time I built the shed. You can carry a length of railway line on the top of an old Series 2 with decent carry bars). It is the single best thing I have ever made for use at home. And the older I get the more I appreciate it.
I read this article on autospeed a while back, I'd consider it a good holistic view on how a home automotive workshop should be planned, designed and executed.
It's an 8 part series, just click the links at the bottom for the next part.
Very informative.
AutoSpeed - Building a Home Workshop, Part 1
Part 6-8 is where the 'filling the shed' is concerned.

Hello from Brisbane.
I find the Wurth annual calendar, a fridge and a wall mounted bottle opener and catcher tray to be fairly useful ways of keeping and losing track of time.
Cheers,
As your in primbee, a good lock, actually locks, wire mesh windows, alarm with battery back up and 2 attack dogs. Don't worry about dynabolting things down as they just take longer for them to flog.
Coming from 2530-Kanahooka postcode we hear about you lot on the other side of the lake!
Seriously though sounds good, maybe an old series landy or damage your credit card and hit evilbay or grays for your interests. Next house we build I want a shed as well, not that big, maybe 6x6m with a 2.6-3m entry.
The one thing I didn't do that I know regret when I built my shed was to bury a couple of forty foot containers under the slab. Build stairs down into them in one corner and utilise the space for storage and convert an area as a work pit. A good idea I never thought of till years later.
I like the idea of the under-storage shipping containers. Just got to figure out how to stop them collapsing in on themselves once buried (al-la Mythbusters style) and you have a great deal more usable room.
