    how far we have come

been working with this internet thing since the days it was text mode only

when i first started my isp service there was no google, actually www was just starting to take over from gopher

the likes of alta vista were the go

after a while google came along and i hunted for a common term that resulted in just one result

"pink door mat" was the winner

was like that for a year or two and then i got 3 results....

just looked it up now and i get

    About 2,180,000 results (0.37 seconds)
i reckon over 2,000,000 of them will be paid advertising.

I think the same when I compare the first Hewlett-Packard computer I worked with in 1968 and those of today.

That first one had 4 kilobytes of memory.

No, it wasn't a calculator, it was a rack-mounted computer with a Teletype input and punched tape reader at a separate desk.

I remember reading "new scientist" back then and they called it a "googlewhackblatt". By publishing it they of course destroyed it. They also wondered how many "o"'s you had to put into gooooogle's name to generate one.

the things you could do with next to nothing....

i ran a bbs on a 64kb atari 800 with 300 baud modems i built myself. had people ringing it from all over the world.

then went bigtime / multiline on a modified atari 600xl with 128kb ram that bank switched 16kb memory pages so you could play stick figure games online with oasis bbs software, and 2 @ 2400baud modems

    memories....

I remember using a BBS. Can't remember which one. Used to use it to chat with a few friends.
I eventually was introduced to Netscape and Alta Vista.

    Yes, back then, Whoda thought?

I started calling into a BBS from my Dick Smith System 80 Business Computer with a dial-up modem. It must have been 300bps, but I know that when I upgraded to (probably) 1200bps, it was a fantastic improvement.

I have no idea which BBS I was accessing at that time - probably a computer oriented one.

When Google first started to take off I was working in tech support for HP. Altavista and Dogpile where my two favourite search engines

Didn't take us long to discover we could find stuff in HP's library of documents faster with Google than the interal systems designed to catalogue them

I was a relative late comer to the Internet..... I started with one of those flash new 28.8kbps modems... now I happily live on a Dosis 3 cable at 100mbps (Or there abouts)

How far have we come?..... forwards by about 3,472.2 times by my calculations
