I remember it well (I,m old enough) it was one of those incidents where you remember what you were doing at the time. Cyclone Tracey is another one, the assassination of President Kennedy was another.
I remember a batch of news items when the Tasman bridge was originally built in '62 that they discovered that under at least one bit of the river bottom there is an underground river.
i.e. drill into the river bed for the caissons to support the piers and if you go deep enough you will find water again.
Not sure how deep the second river is, or how wide.
The Derwent itself is deep enough though to allow most ships to go up and down anywhere across its width. The previous floating bridge had a lift span just metres from the western shore. So, NO chance of filling a bit in.
