The fitters at the mine I work at seem to stick with what they know,the guys that did their time at Hastings or only worked with CAT gear won't touch anything with Sandvik written on it.

One of the problems with apprentice training these days is that very few local mechanics take on apprentices so it is left to new car dealers and they (mostly) only train their apprentices on their marque of vehicle and its diagnostic equipment. The result is qualified mechanics who are reluctant to touch any other marque.

Perhaps we need a system where apprentices are educated by a training provider, are rotated through a sequence of automotive workshops large and small (and paid by that workshop). Then we would end up with qualified mechanics with a broad spectrum of experience able and willing to work on almost any brand. (Sounds like socialism doesn't it?)

And the other problem here is that all the cars are reasonable new, as the majority of car owners don't go back to stealers when cars are out of warranty, so the apprentice spends most of his time doing services, and learning the diagnostics.

I wonder how many of these have ever done a head gasket during their apprenticeship, let alone an engine rebuild.

Nah ... Give them a single cylinder air cooled "normally aspirated" engine, that won't go, and ask them to fix it.

Its why we have a generation of replacement parts fitters rather than mechanics.

An old mate had a British Motor cycle shop inMelbourne, ( he owned the bike in the Chiko Roll poster) anyhow someone pushes a Harley through the front door, sorry indont do tractors , :
